Banning on Shark Fin

What is most insulting, what is the biggest affront, is that they kill the sharks, cut off the fins and dump the rest of their body over the side. It reminds me of ivory poachers that will kill an elephant, cut off it's tusks, and just leave it there. My grandfather grew upon a farm. He taught me that when you kill an animal you should show respect. You use everything possible. What these people are doing is beyond a disgrace.

Shark fin is over-price, not much taste. Kind of ordinary.

However, I am totally against the banning of it. I wonder if someone will step up with a lawsuit. I doubt it because not sure if anyone really cares that much. I don't know a single person who claims that soup fin is his or her favourite soup.

A court challenge would be most interesting.

This is more of an attack on Chinese culture than it is protection of sharks and oceans.

Cry me a fucking river, hypocrites.

Bullshit. This is about butchery for no reason other than greed.

Bullshit. What business is this of the municipal government? Is it open season for city council to tramp on people's rights now, in terms of what they can eat?
I was speaking about the practice in general. It's butchery for no reason. As far as local governments, federal governments, whatever you like, there are all kinds of things that aren't legal to kill and eat. How does that trample on people's rights?

Not just wasting time!!!!!

Worse.

The restaurants could in theory start class action and sue for damage and when they win then may god have mercy on the taxpayers who those cities represent.
Bingo. Why are we taking up this fight?

Shows how much the mayor's clout has diminished since a few months ago. Good thing too, since this is another issue he was on the wrong side of.

On top of yo mama!
while i support a ban, the problem is that markham or richmond hill doesnt have a ban. all the good chinese restos already moved up to there. it just forces more patrons to cross to other side of steeles ave.

.... hopefully the ban will eventually spread nation-wide.

I'd like to think that enough Canadians (Chinese or not) are repulsed by the reality of the shark fin trade.
Just because something is a tradition does not make it moral - I really hope higher levels of government visit the issue soon.

I am afraid it won't be long before such wonderful shark products
disappear from the health food stores.

Chinese have absolutely zero respect for the environment, zero.
While I'm sure there are some that do care and that they do have environmental groups as well as animal rights groups, I'd venture to say the majority don't give a flying fuck - if it can get their tiny wangs bigger, longer life (to enjoy what?...a more damaged environment? or to do more damage to it?) and more money, they'll kill and eat whatever they care to.

Wow, really?!? I'm surprised you wrote such a comment given the Leo Rosten quote you have on your signature line. You are really knowledgable enough to make a generalization on an entire culture?!?

Well, if you are actually correct, then everyone is screwed one way or another - since the chinese represents roughly 20% of the world's population. That's a whole hell of a lot of damage:rolleyes:
