I know a lot of us, especially our SP girls use a lot of antiseptic mouthwashes, and I just wanted to share this info to better all of our health. I've been using antibacterial mouthwash (I thought alcohol free was good enough) 2x every time I see an SP, before and after, and noticed some gut issues recently. I thought this would be preventing STIs etc, but killing 99.999% of all of your healthy bacteria over and over again will lead to a lot of problems. I am now only using natural mouthwash.
Here are some facts I found:
A recent study published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine found that using an antiseptic mouthwash twice daily kills off the good bacteria that help blood vessel walls relax, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and a variety of other health issues.
By killing off all of the bacteria in your mouth, you are actually increasing your risk of heart disease(2) instead of decreasing it, even if you use the mouthwash for just a short amount of time.
Antibacterial mouthwashes can reduce this protection [nitric oxide], putting you at risk of getting infections such as H Pylori and C-difficile, [candida / yeast overgrowth etc], as well as gut inflammation that can lead to Increased Intestinal Permeability and contribute to Gluten Sensitivity, Food Allergies, and even autoimmune disease.
Avoid mouthwashes with chlorhexidine (Listerine etc.)) and cetylpyridinium chloride, such as Crest Pro Health Rinse, Scope, Cepacol, Dentyl, Act, and many others. If you still want to use a mouthwash to freshen your breath, try one that’s made of natural herbal ingredients instead of a chemical one that bills itself as antiseptic.
“The mouth is the first meeting place between the alimentary canal, the immune system, and the outside world. It’s pretty important!”
