Saw Avatar this evening and must say that it's truly a great movie. I've shied away from 3D before but this time it was incredibly well done. Some have described this movie as an alien "Dances with Wolves". Similar theme but very well done. Great cinematography and the CGI very much adds to the plot, not there for the sake of special effects. The most impressive aspect for me is the messaging the movie conveys. After the disappoint of the Copenhagen accord, the eco-friendly messaging is refreshing. Even more to the point is the anti-war subtext that likely will be lost on Americans who, for far too long, simply invade countries to take whatever they want, whenever they want it. Go see this movie!

If you're into the "messaging", just imagine what the half-billion dollars (spent making the movie) could have done instead of making the movie, and what the tens of millions of dollars spent just this weekend in going to see it could have accomplished.

Actually... probably not a hell of a lot when you figure that America is spending about a billion dollars a day in their wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Let's not forget the right wing controlled media in the US and the general population who gets most of their news from watching crap like Fox news and/or reality shows. If this movie gives them a moment to pause and take stock of what America really stands for "CONSUMPTION" then I think it is money well spent.

saw it in 3d it was a experience but to be honest it was a 250 million remake of ferngully lol

now saying that this is still a amazing movie , visually its a 11 or 12 out of 10 . the characters are well thought out and serve there purpose but the plot was too similar to other movies of this base .

my only real problem was 3 hours but im not a fan of movies that drag on . never really liked watchman for this exact reason.

Did anyone else think that the guy leading the Americans sounded a lot like George Bush when giving the speech before the war? For example, when he said, "We must meet terror with terror," it sounded a lot like Bush, and for a moment the character also looked like him.

Is it just me, or was this intentional?

This is often a problem these days with blockbuster movies... Incredible effects and visual representation, but lacks a real good story!

However... that is what sells movies these days... **sigh**

Watching AVATAR must be like watching Gone with Wind or The Wizard of OZ in the 30's, when gorgeous colour was used for the first time. Movies have now changed forever because of Camerson, though it'll be a decade or more before what he's done to really filter through.

The guys at PIXAR should be scared because this makes their work, look like the work of amateurs. And I love PIXAR

Questions

Do they give you 3D glasses when you watch it in 3D?

Is there much of a difference between seeing it in 2D vs. 3D?

What kind of 3D glasses do they give? Do they give out those cheap paper ones with one red lense and one blue lense that you get at the bottom of Cheerios cereal boxes that give you a headache? Or are they better?

They're still a little hard on your eyes for the first 10 - 20 minutes but the discomfort goes away. The momentary headache is worth the visuals in my opinion and the extra $4 ticket price to see it in 3D at my theatre.

PIXAR, IMHO, will continue to thrive because they care about the "story". Who didn't bawl or want to in the first 10 minutes of "UP"? Or make a movie where NO WORDS are spoken yet so much emotion comes through as in "WALL-E". As long as they stick to that, they'll do just fine. They could animate their movies in South Park style animation and they'd still be great because of writing and stories.

...

James "fat head" Cameron with another epic failure.

Simplistic story.

Too much emphasis on the technology of making the film.

Some scenes are too drawn out.

In my opinion some of the minor characters don't get attention that is needed.

.... and yet .....

... and yet ......

People will flock to see this monstrosity.

Yes I know , my views are rather harsh. I studied film for a brief while and have learned to really resent much of the mainstream.
