Pet owners get way too serious about their pets. A friend of mine "couldn't afford" the $150 pair of new glasses for one of their kids, but two weeks later they dropped $500 on vets bills for the family dog.

When you look at the penalties in this country for animal abuse vs. child abuse, it's pretty clear social priorities have been totally skewed.

Don't get me wrong -- I love cats and well-trained Rotties, I just can't imagine choosing a furball that won't live more than 10 years over the needs of a child.
