Attacked by spam ads whenever I use Firefox

Day or two ago, I downloaded a computer game add-on from a reputable guy on a reputable fan site for my favourite computer game. The guy was clearly legit, knew everybody, had spent massive time creating his add-on, etc. But weirdly, he had this elaborate, unfamiliar download procedure which involved a .exe program.

Because the guy was legit, I d/l-ed his stuff and it was brilliant in the game. But the d/l wrecked my Firefox program. First, I had to re-set both my IE and Firefox homepages from a bogus search engine bullshit site that had defaulted as my "new" home page. That was annoying, but easily done.

That seems to have solved the IE problem. But Firefox is still plagued with a half-dozen trashy link-ads for Asian brides, computer games and cheap shoes on almost every page, inlcuding Twitter, Instagram, TERB and pretty much everything else, apart from FB and Google.

Not fatal, but hellishly annoying.

Does anyone know what this horseshit is and how to get rid of it?

Download Malwarebytes and/or Spybot and scan your computer. I'd uninstall Firefox (saving my bookmarks), run the scans, then reinstall. Also do a reboot after scanning.

I considered removing firefox, but am afraid the trojan is nestled eleswhere on the hardrive. I noticed that google chrome (which I never use) is also infected. IE (OTOH) appears to be immune.

A couple of follow-up questions:

1. Is it possible just to "take the computer back" 3 days to a point before the trojan was likely downloaded?
2. What is the procedure for saving bookmarks if I uninstall firefox?

Go to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML and save to your desktop/hard drive.

Depending on your OS you could try running a System Restore via Control Panel to take you back in time. I only do that if everything else fails.

Run the scans. That might fix the problem.

Did a system restore to time before trojan invaded and everything appears to be fine. Thanks for help.

Yes, the system allows you to pick certain retroactive dates so I went back to a date BEFORE the mishap and it put me back to where I was which is in a good place. It is as if the bad thing never happened and I lost no data.

Here the link to download malwarebytes http://m.download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html I used it on my friends PC she had a antivirus on it and she thought it protected her computer but the computer was running slow. And kookie when I ran malwarebytes something like 300 plus threats showed up and was contained and her PC went back to being normal.

Used to run Malwarebytes and Spybot Seach and Destroy weekly when I used M$!
Kept Windows clean.

I was having similar problems as the OP when I downloaded the Kies connectivity software on my PC for my Galaxy 3 mini. I found that the adware was causing viewing problems on TERB. And even on some MP/agency websites the ads were blocking the pictures of the girls.

I used a similar approach as the solution by Keebler Elf and it worked like a charm (the ads are not appearing anymore).
