If people are dumb enough to leave a loaded gun around a house where kids can get access to it, of course shit is going to happen. People don't realize the value of a precious life until a mistake is made. And then they learn.

We can surely do something about 3,308 people drowning in the USA now, cant we? Why does anyone need a pool if 3,308 people die as a result?

"Each year, an estimated 443,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking in the USA"
...
"In 2010, there were an estimated 5,419,000 crashes, killing 32,885 and injuring 2,239,000."
Laws ensuring that pools are properly secured (fenced in) make a lot of sense and save lives.

Laws restricting where people can smoke in public or around children are sensible and save lives.

Laws to improve safety in cars have been around for decades (seat belts) and most people go well beyond the minimum requirements for their own safety (airbags).

Why are laws ensuring guns are properly secured and laws restricting where guns can be carried so offensive to you?

90% of a cherry picked sample size were in favour of a vague concept of "expanded" background checks. Many of which probably aren't even aware of NICS or that a failed background check is what prevented the Newtown shooter from buying a gun from a gun store and instead caused him to steal (as in, commit a crime) his mother's guns.
Ok, so hold on, you're implying that if the shooter had been able to legally purchase the gun, that he would not have used it for the same purpose? I'd say if he failed the background check then at least they're doing something right down there... But whatever they decide to do doesn't really matter because, lets face it, if somebody really wants a gun, they will find a way to get one. Strict regulations - hell, even an outright ban - or not, people will ALWAYS be able to acquire guns illegally.
