Yup I agree....kind of sobering.
I would question though the results of a meteor that big. Something that looks almost 1/8 the mass of the earth would have knocked the planet out of orbit, probably cracked the planet into two or more pieces etc.
But it wouldn't take anything that large to destroy earth. What was the one in mexico they figure? About 2 miles across?
Like the line from the movie Armageddon: "A global killer, not even bacteria would survive".
Not to put an even bigger damper on the day: But with the intensity NASA is going after landing on Mars, I'm beginning to suspect that they know something they're not letting us in on. That maybe they have discovered something that WILL hit us in the not too distant future (or that they realize we've actually done too much damage to the planet and that what we've done isn't reversible).
