It would appear that they were short of the runway. Hit the sea wall in a nose up attitude. Broke the tail section off just aft of the pressure bulkhead. The bulk of the aircraft then slid down then off the runway.

As ABV wrote they are now saying the aircraft was low on approach and not at the right angle of attack and the tail struck the seawall.

Options at this point are pilot error - pilot fatigue, or a problem with the ILS.

Very, very early - the NTSB "Go-team" hasn't even arrived yet.

I believe the two passengers who were killed today, are the first 777 fatalities.

I've heard that the ILS for 28L was out of service. PAPI was in service.

cnn says 60 are missing. have to wonder about that photo showing people coming out of the plane with their luggage. did they slow down the evacuation by going into the overhead bins?

No they hit 28L.
Imagine if it was a training flight with an upgrade Captain flying. Having to hand fly due to no ILS. Inexperience & the pressure to perform under the watch of superiors....

I was just kidding around! OMG ...HAND FLYING? I suspect the winshield was also u/s!

But seriuosly though, the Koreans have a culture of respect for heirarchy that is known to have negative implications on CRM

It's not a respect thing that sewers CRM. It's saving face.

Hand flying its a perfectly acceptable term.

As for my "Imagine if". Only time will tell.

I know hand flying is a perfectly acceptable term. Just these guys dont seem to do it too well today. I hear that if there is no coupled approach to ILS minimums with these asian "pilots" its CFIT time! Lol

Looks to be pilot error, sink rate was too high, tried to correct a the last minute, smashed the tail on the seawall and the rest of the events unfolded. Kinda sad. 777 is a magnificent machine, to have it's perfect record of no fatalities ruined by what looks to be a failure to manage the approach properly.

That is exactly what it is starting to look like.

This ^

The 777 is a magnificent plane, her only flaw are the humans that fly her.....

While of course it is too early to tell if it was pilot error, the video shows too low, too slow.......the NTSB comments that they were 'significantly lower than target airspeed, the early indications of a stick shaker stall warning, the late attempt to go around....all point at something gone amiss in the cockpit.

Cockpit Resource Management is of paramount importance..... occasionally Pilots fixate on seemingly minor events, and forget to 'Mind the Store'....... resulting in tragedy.

I suspect that something caught the attention of the crew.....and they forgot the most basic of all rules...... 'fly the plane'
