While that stereo type holds true, I can attest from personal experience that at every convention there is a nice little sub-set of hotties and partiers. Especially now more than ever with sci-fi in general in the mainstream.

Basically you get a lot of mid-20's dressing up in slutty outfits staying in a hotel for a weekend drinking and their guard down. You get the tortured artist type, goths, shy ones until the costume up, wanna be writers and yes trekkies who are in the closet except at conventions.

In my younger days before going with my SO it was great. Remember that if you are normal, decent looking and hygienic you STAND OUT compared to the sloths. I didn't even have to work at it. Just get a room, stock with booze and and feign interest(with a passable knowledge of what they are a fan of) and you are good to go.........

I almost picked up a nerdie gal who was quite talkative but I was with my young nephew and couldn't escape. There's a lot of eye-candy.

what's a cosplayer?

People who dress up in seriously impressive costumes and act in character while going to these things, or in Asia, going about real life. You will see girls in full costume acting in character wandering around shopping areas in Tokyo and Seoul.

Some of them mimic characters from comics or movies, some invent their own characters. It attracts a surprising number of women who enjoy flirting in character, maybe as a sort of deniability when they are out of costume.

The "pro" ones are aspiring models or paid to show up to these things but you will find a lot of girls from Toronto strutting it at these events. You do not have to go to the lame convention to meet them, they will be roaming around the streets in full costume and at nearby bars and nightclubs if it is nice weather.
