Are Toronto Streets Safe At Night?

I would like to walk on Toronto streets at night to get some exercise when the temperatures are cooler. But I suspect Toronto is no longer as safe as it was 10 years ago. If I take a midnight stroll, will I be playing with fire?

Only if you are far away from any bars, clubs or what ever they are called that consumes alcohol/beer. Do not cross intersection greater than 3 - 4 lanes and look all 6 directions when crossing even if it is a one way street. Yes it means looking behind you. Don't step to close to the curb.

Wear reflectors with flashlight and no black clothes. No ear plug or headphones, listen to your environment unless you want to get mugged from the rear because you didn't hear them come.

Best protection is to carry a Sears catalog rolled up as a hockey stick.

Even if you walk around Driftwood, Chalkfarm, Pallisades, John Garland, Varna drive, Bleeker Street, Parliament and Gerard, Galloway, Crowtrail, Chester Le, Blake Street, the chances of anything bad happening to you are slim. Toronto doesn't even make the top 20 in terms of crime and murder rate in this country.

I don’t get to Toronto very often, maybe 5 times a year and always stay downtown. Never once had any problems or issues walking around at night

I walk about 2 hours 2-3 times a week downtown at night. I pretty much do a lap around the entire downtown core. It's safe. The only issue you'll have is now and then you might come across a transient saying some weird shit, but you just zip past them and it's fine.

Usually wrong place at the wrong time. Innocent unsuspecting people get hurt/killed through violent intentional acts and poor decisions made by others. There are however many areas in the city you will not see me visiting at any time of the day. Whenever you have to always be suspecting of someone or looking over your shoulder, you are definitely in the wrong place

It is more the fear factor than anything actually happening . It is when you feel "safe " that something happens which is bad luck.

in the downtown core, you will see homeless and other sketchy characters around on some streets (especially these days), but overall it's pretty safe

It is usually not surprising to see which posters have the highest levels of fear.

Other than avoiding dark alleys where drug addicts hang out in the wee hours, there's not much to be afraid of. And yes, I was a little white boy who spent chunks of childhood in Regent, Parkdale, and Jane-Finch.

Downtown is teeming with people at night. It’s always been safe for a major city, but it feels even safer now because the whole core is filled with people out and about.

I would agree with you there except the occasional pedestrians getting killed unexpectedly by erratic crazy drivers lol.

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but yeah you have to be careful.

When I used to go clubbing, this girl hit me with her car. I was so drunk that I just bounced off, and laughed it off.

No Richard I wasn't at all being sarcastic in my comment, but I'm glad you are alive to contribute your input here after that drunk driver failed to wipe you out completely from years ago lol.

Red House over yonder.
If you are concerned about a particular area in Canada or the US, this can be a useful website. It shows recent crimes within a 5 mile radius of an address on a one time or regular reported basis. Reports and subscriptions are free. Toronto is a safe city but by using this site the Prez has a general sense of where, when, and at what time robberies, assaults, and shootings have occurred. Using this site over time has given me a sense of recurring small hot spots and times that are not always what you might expect. Wise recon is not paranoia.
