Are guns really that expensive?

I was looking through some second-hand audio equipment that's on sale on the Audiogon.com forum. (There's also videogon.com for those who might be interested.) Anyhow, I was looking at a particular pair of high-end amplifiers (They're monobloacks so you need 2) and the guy was advertising that he'd consider trades of sub-machine guns for the amps.

The amps were being offered at about $17,000 US. Are machine guns that expensive?

And no, he didn't say why he wanted the machine guns and no longer needed the amps.

Machine guns (even sub-machine guns) are illegal almost everywhere in North America. Maybe that has something to do with it...

Personaly I would think about reporting the ad to the police. Seems to me that advertising in an audio forum is odd to obtain weapons.

Machine gun's ARE NOT ILLEGAL in the States.And if your old enough and were Grandfathered in when the law's were passed,you can have them here in Canada also.
Yes they are big money,especially in the States.And keeping them running even more so.
Before people jump up and down and cry wolf,do your homework.

Really. I find that hard to believe. Owning a fully automatic machine gun is not illegal in most US states?

I got this from a quick search of the Bureau of ATF in the United States. I'm sure there are loopholes though. http://www.atf.gov

Prohibitions on Certain Types of Firearms

Federal firearms laws prohibit transactions in and possession of certain types of firearms. These include, for example:

-Transfer or possession of a machinegun, 18 U.S.C. 922(o);

-Manufacture, importation, sale, or possession of any firearm not detectable by airport security devices, 18 U.S.C. 922(p);

-and Possession of a firearm not registered as required by the NFA, 26 U.S.C. 5861(d).

From the same website; this seems to contradict the prohibition of machineguns but perhaps registration is just extremely hard to obtain for them.

M. FIREARMS - NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT (NFA)

(M1) The types of firearms that must be registered in the National Firearm Registration and Transfer Record are defined in the NFA and in 27 CFR Part 179. What are some examples? [Back]

Some examples of the types of firearms that must be registered are:
Machineguns;
The frames or receivers of machineguns;
Any combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting weapons into machineguns;
Any part designed and intended solely and exclusively for converting a weapon into a machinegun;
Any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled if the parts are in the possession or under the control of a person;
Silencers and any part designed and intended for fabricating a silencer;
Short-barreled rifles;
Short-barreled shotguns;
Destructive devices; and,
"Any other weapons."

Whatever the case may be, if they are not illegal they should be.

I heard they outlawed machineguns during the Clinton era but it came with an expiry date which expired last year and Bush decided not to renew it.
Or at least thats the best I can remember it.
What Keebler found maybe a webpage they forgot to update.

As far as I know owning a machinegun with certain restrictions is perfectly legal.

The Clinton era bill was a ban on assault rifles. That bill has expired. AFAIK, machineguns are still illegal. If they weren't, why do I hear people making a big fuss about going to someplace in/near Vegas where you can fire fully automatic weapons legally. It's not commonplace.

That webpage is the current, active page for the Bureau of ATF.

Ah yes, Keebler is right. I was thinking about assault rifles, which BTW can be easily comverted to machine-guns.

They, in fact, are illegal, at least according to the site listed above (since 1934 unless authorized by the Dept of the Treasury and after 1986...no civilians). Can't speak for Canada, but would have to assume the laws would be more stringent. Non-automatics are controlled at the state level, so laws tend to vary quite a bit.

They aren't, but in 1986 the manufacture of full-auto weapon's for civillian use was halted.
Hence the outragous price's.
They still allow the manufacture of such weapon's for law enforcement and military use.
To purchase a full auto take's an FBI back ground search,a $200.00 transfer tax per weapon.All in all about an 8 month wait.

Which begs the question, for what reason would anyone need to own one?

Why do you need a car that goes 0-100 mph when the speed limit is 60?
Why a computer that's so quick?
Why all the plaza's and super mall's,verses mom and pop store's?
Because we can.

Well, that makes sense. Personally I'm holding out for when I can get a RPG or maybe one of those shoulder held missile launchers. That'd be the bomb.
