ok Papi you sign up to be locked away in a 2 by 3 metre cell, with a filthy blanket only to sleep on that someone previously has urinated or maybe worse on, oh did I mention the almost daily beatings you would get by being hung from the ceiling by your ankles and when they got tired of beating you with sticks would hook electrical charges to your genitals

Syrian prisons make Midnight Express seem like a Sunday family movie

Cheers to PM Stephen Harper for accepting the truth verses wrong !
Canadians are today proud of our Government.
Any compensation cannot repay the sufferings what he went through being an innocent man.
Hope such mistakes are never repeated in future, where justice prevails.

Aw, we didn't even touch the guy.

If we're paying out that kind of money, maybe we should be allowed to slap him a few times.

He was compensated because "we" (the Canadian authorities, RCMP, CSIS) screwed up. In other word, "we" already destroyed the guy's life. Any amount of money cannot buy back what Arar has lost.

Credit where credit is due: Harper showed real class by doing this.

Tell that to the Canadian Hong Kong vets that were actually brutally tortured by the Japs in WW2 and they'll spit in your face. Thousands died from the mistreatment and starvation and they WERE Canadian.

Error made was arar made it back.

You mistake class with politics.

However it was the right thing to do.

Have you noticed the trend. The conservatives have been reacting to the polls and will do just about anything to get re-elected. I do not think there is anything wrong with that, in fact I am hoping for another minority government in the next election; seems more democratic than a 5 year majority.

Leave it up to LancsLad to compare apples and oranges.

That tempest in a teapot over this arar guy is just blather. If he had an "acciden" over there it would have all gone away.

What I am saying is we ( as a country) trip over ourselves to be nice to them but accept without any apology or compensation what the Japs in WW2 did to our boys. Shame. Political correctness at its most crass.

I guess Syria is kicking in their share, right????

How about the United States? Their role seemed rather prominent to me.

I don't know if Arar is innocent or not. It's certainly been proven lately that American intelligence isn't worth much.

I had hoped against hope not to have to read this kind of post from you. Next I suppose you are going to support the pig farmer from BC.

Totally different issue. I say fry the pork guy and save the cost of the trial.

As for my thoughts on the arar guy, I couldn't care less about his situation when put into contaxt of the uncompensated agony that Canadians have been subject to by others.

Nobody seems to notice that the reason behind the faulty intelligence was that he had attended an Alqeda (sp?) terrorist training camp, but had not actually done anything with the training. Maybe he thought it was Club Med???
Yet again politicians pander to the media. He's getting $10,000,000 of the money you paid in taxes for not using his training because he was deported to a country who knew him for what he was.
Never thought I'd agree with Lancs, but leave pity for those who deserve it.
