With so much recent talk about Arab "democracy", it is time to ask the politically incorrect question: "What exactly is Arab "democracy"?

Is it respect for minority, women and generally all human rights? Is it diversity and acceptance of other cultures, religions, sexual orientation, etc.?

That's the scary part. Maybe we should write a constitution for them. "All men and women and gays are created equal..............".

I think they need to learn to walk before they can run. Let's start with one person, one vote and go from there.

Kind of like the US did. Or maybe even better.

Democracy is rule by the majority. Freedom of individuals is a different thing. We have freedoms because the majority of people want it. The majority of those in the Arab world may not. I hope that they reach democracy and realize they are better off for letting people be free to live their lives how they want it. I hope they realize the importance equal rights for all people and choose a secular government and law. Unfortunately I doubt it. So we wait and see if they are even able to achieve democracy.

Democracy isn't merely majority rule. Most would agree that democracies ensure basic freedoms for individuals and also minority rights and in some cases minority group rights. No doubt it will take different forms in different countries.

When apartheid ended in South Africa I know some Canadian constitutional experts were invited to assist in drawing up a new constitution there. It'll be interesting to see how it happens in Egypt especially. Whatever they do they should be very careful not to set up a system like Israel's by which the majority is held captive by minority interests.

Sure but I am not optimistic since other than Israel and Turkey, many of the Arab States have no meaningful, non-petroleum dependent economy to speak of, let alone a rising middle class.

Without those investment and enforcement of basic stuffs you mentioned over time sustainably, any democracy in majority rule for the sake of it will be easily be manipulated and transformed the region into the hotbed of religious fundamentalist states.

South Africa may be better than their neighbors but the results after the apartheid are mixed. Remember BEE?

"Turkish solution" would be the start and hopefully evolve into Israeli's one in terms of parliamentary democracy, not the one in Lebanon where the political parties have separate militia/armed wings/muscles.
