There's no way it will have a retina display with the same resolution as the iphone4, there would be too many pixels to power. The graphics processor would also have to be significantly more powerful than the current version, and would draw too much power.

Also... the last two times jobs took a leave, he set return dates. This time it sounds very open ended as to when/if he will return.

Jobs is also the vision of the company, and also the only one with the real power to make changes or start over midstream on a product. While losing him short term won't affect the company as he has most likely already set a roadmap... if he is out for good, the company will certainly lose some steam.

After all those options are tallied up, they are into your pants for well over a grand! Something only a rube or fanboi could swallow....
Apparently 15 million of them in the last 9 months....

I love my iPad for what it can do- primarily business stuff such as being a portable office everything... Mind you, it takes some strategy to make my office 100% iPad portable

All that so called kit is one extra purchase of $29 bucks and it measures 1 inch sq by 1/4 inch thick.

Anyway I don't really care if I convince anyone to buy one, but at least go to an apple store and try one so you can bash it with first hand knowledge.

I have played around with iPad several times at Apple Store and agree it is an overpriced, nice 'bright & shiny' toy with too many limitations. I just didn't fall for all the hype over it. FWIW I have a niece who got a very nice Samsung netbook for Xmas with W7 starter OS that runs circles around iPad and costs <$400.

Here's the Samsung site & price:

Love the controversy an "Apple" posts generates everytime!
One last question...for those who have one....is it good for reading books? Does it compare favourable to task specific e-readers like Kindle, Kobe, Sony etc?

My SO has a Kindle, she's read books on my iPad as well, except in direct sunlight (where the iPad's glossy screen throws a glare) it's the same (larger screen obviously). You can download the free Amazon app and download the books you've purchased on Amazon as well.

Apart from the screen issue does she have a preference, iPad vs. Kindle?

Not really, the Kindle is lighter but it only does one thing - the fact that she can get both the Economist and her books on one device really pushes her over the edge toward an iPad more than the book reading experience. There are a few differences other than the screen, weight (as I said), font size adjustments, portrait or landscape (two pages per screen). You wouldn't buy an iPad just to read books, if you're going to do anything else (apps, music, video, web, news/magazines, games) then you wouldn't bother with a Kindle.

I also have a Macbook Air (which weighs about the same as the iPad with a larger screen) and when I travel I find that I use the iPad more often (other than work tasks) because of the better form factor.

Don't worry. It's a gag reflex with Woodie, no matter what is written.

Too bad most apps are built assuming you have 768 or more pixels of vertical resolution, not 600. Should have spent $100 more and picked up a WXGA model. It really sucks having to scroll down or shuffle windows around just to click an OK button.

That's a really small keyboard. Does it come with a stylus so I can type? :p

Come now, you can't just say, "Oh yes you can cover all these functionality gaps!" then just cite the price / size of the dongle... I'm a Free Software guy, but I don't really have a dog in the Tablet race, and I've never been partisan about hardware (beyond a preference for it running a traditional Linux / running well under Linux, which Android isn't / doesn't). As a reasonably well informed outsider looking in, the iPad is just plain 'odd' as a general computing device. If you said non-embedded OsX and a Macbook Air (or whatever they are) that's within the normal realm of Apple gouging**, and I can understand that... but... iPad... hype.

**Apple Gouging = Apple products do tend to be of superior quality and excellent industrial design when compared to the rest of the consumer segment. With that being said, their margins are also MUCH higher, along with their advertising budget (on a per unit basis). You can't really fault them too much for that as it is common practise for higher end brands.

I read a report last week that said that Apple is the #1 smartphone vendor in the world by revenue.....

With the number of increasingly mature consumer embedded OSes proliferating that will probably get squeezed. Back to the notion of a 'high water mark': it's not that the lake empties out overnight but the water moves back from that line (often very slowly).

On this I think we disagree, I will say the analyst that follow the stock are on my side here. I read a report today that the stock was undervalued because of Jobs taking medical leave and some analyst put a $550 target on the stock......

We shall see.

If you're a book lover, Kindle hands down. If you're more into magazines and textbooks, I'd go with an iPad and a good PDF reader app (I can recommend a few).

I still prefer to read a book on the iPad... Bigger screen and readily accessible external (web) research available on hand.
