Windows 8 mobile version better be good - HTC & Nokia are backing on it. Some analysts feel there is only room for 3 systems in the market and with both Apple O/S & Android firmly entrenched that fight could be between Windows 8 & the Blackberry 10. 2013 should be an interesting year.

Depends who you listen to. Some are using the beta RC W8 and love it. Others think it will be another Vista. So who knows....
I'm just glad I switched to Linux and could care less.....;)

Support is ending for some versions of Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/end-support

Support for Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014.
Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended on July 12, 2011.
Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended on July 13, 2010.*

If you're running one of these versions after support ends, you won't get security updates for Windows.

But the Rumours seems to swirling that Windows 8 might be half baked like vista according to the head of Intel.

I'm definitely not going to use Windows 8, I'll keep 7 for as long as I can and then either switch to Linux or Mac.
But, I have to admit, until I try it, I can't bash it. But it doesn't look that great from what I've seen online.

Switching to Linux ~5 yrs ago was the best move I ever made.
At this point in time, it's GREAT to be M$ & Apple FREE and not allowing either to pick my pockets every couple years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can do ANYTHING desired now for FREE with Linux, since their OS and all their related software are FREE and work fine!

Started off by dual booting with Windows and Linux which enabled me to use both OSs and become familiar with Linux at my own pace. A dual boot setup is not that difficult and is fully explained on Linux sites. The various FREE Linux 'help Forums' are excellent for answering any newbie questions.

I wonder. They have been announcing the death of Windows XP for years now yet it is still the World's most popular operating system and second in the US (to Windows 7). Microsoft makes a lot of revenue from upgrades so I'm guessing that they will be happy when that pesky persistent Windows XP finally dies.

LOL!
Wouldn't be surprised if XP is extended yet again!
XP is still a popular rock solid OS....;)

Is there any possibility that XP might get a stay of execution? Also, is it safe to still run XP on a stand-alone (i.e. not connected to the Internet) basis after the kill date?

Waiting for Windows 8, yes. I don't want to buy a new computer until it comes out...so I am slugging it out on one I'd really like to dump.
I don't run Windows, but from everything I've read, and from my experience with M$ products trying to do something big and new, stick to 7 and wait for 8 SP 2+, or Windows 9. Waiting on Windows 8 very much sounds like waiting to get kicked in the nuts.

(I have one copy of Windows XP that I keep as a virtual machine image that I dust off when I need Windows. When I need it, I copy it to the computer I need it on, and fire it up in a VM.)

Spot on!!!

FWIW XP, Vista & W7 are all rock solid, however I still think Linux is superior to them all!

Snow Leopard doesn't even enter into the mix because who in their right sane mind would pay for a proprietary controlling Linux distro like that when there are so many out there for FREE!....
