Anyone remember when everything was closed on Sundays?

I kinda liked it. There was more socializing, no work, no errands, no shopping, it very much had a different feel to it from Saturday, more like a holiday.

Where the phrase "Sunday Afternoon Driver" came from- you'd just go for a leisurely drive to enjoy the day.
I def. do - those were good times. We always use to do something on Sunday's as a family growing up.

To circumvent this, the strippers would wear g-strings that were see through knitting (large gaps between the knitting)
Don't forget when the girls carried a small wooden table around for the table dances. Most were no touching but you thought it was so risqué

Yup.
And more, I remember when my dad had to go in and fill out a slip of paper to get a bottle of liquor.

I remember back in the day I was making a delivery to an office in a building on University and Wellington, while waiting for an elevator I saw two elderly ladies exit from a door from an establishment hearing one say to the other, DID YOU SEE THAT? ALL THE GIRLS WERE NAKED IN THERE. So I decided to go in for a beer later. Guess what? She was right. LOL.

I mentioned the term ' Fox on a Box' to desribe this form of past table dancing and had a relatively new to the game stripper laughing a lot over it.
She had never heard of that sort of table dancing.

An few Old Timers i used to work with told me about trying ro get a drink on a Sunday in the old days

They'd go to a Chinese restaurant to be able to order a drink but the rule was you had to be seated to get the drink

The story that made me laugh was drinks could also be bought at horse racing tracks. The catch was you had to order a food item as well. It usually was a sandwich. Apparently the garbage cans at the tracks were filled with sandwiches that didn't have a bite taken out of them

In Quebec, strip clubs weren't allowed to be open on legal holidays related to religion, (Christmas, Good Friday and Easter), so on those days, the club would open at one minute after midnight, when it was officially the next day. They could do a fair amount of business before last call at a quarter to three.

I remember that at the old Greenwood racetrack but the roast beef sandwiches were great.

It isn't really a matter of religion.

Yes yes yes, I get the 'freedom' angle of the whole thing.

But it reminds me of Japan, where a number of years ago they began to FORCE employees to take their holidays, because everyone was working longer hours than required, life became nothing but work, work work.

I love the feeling on a holiday, a weekday holiday, to go outside at 9:30 AM, there is almost no traffic, people are strolling in the park, walking their dogs, fucking their women - OOPS! - bumbling about, doing this or that.

Its just such a chill, relaxed vibe to the world, that's how Sundays used to be.

CNE on labor day - that kind of feel.

Just watched a good documentary on the Beatles. Mentioned was how in the UK in the sixties, they used to chain up the swings in public parks to prevent kids from using them on Sundays.

Back in Oz up through mid 90s Sunday closings. Hotels/pubs open all year except Good Friday. Late shopping was Thursday nights. If you were having company on Sunday had to buy your cartons of beer on Saturday am or Friday etc. Had to know how to plan.
In USA in late 70s we learnt to drive out in empty parking lots on Sunday.

It would be nice if every second Sunday of the month stores were closed. ;)

Walmart recently in my area reduced their hours on Sunday. 2 hours less it used to be open between 7-11pm and now 8-9pm I think.

When stores were closed on Sundays and Ontario people were flocking to Buffalo to shop, Buffalo made Bob Rae their Citizen of the Year!

On a similar note, I found it distasteful when the NBA started to have multiple games on Christmas day. The NFL has now followed, but fortunately the NHL has resisted temptation.
