Always use a burner phone (Petro Canada or 7-11).

Priority is to never give anyone a reason to suspect misdeeds, or a reason to have to explain yourself. Plan your outings in advance, always have alibi's for your time, and plausible denial.

Never assume a PI, of whomever is just going to be following you on the road like on TV. Chances are they will use any number of technical means at their disposal to do their job without ever having to drive around after you...

Always practice safe computing, run scans for spyware, key-loggers, whatever. Use a secure computer with private access, NEVER a common computer. Use PM's or have a private gMail account. If worried about the security of your own WiFi, use your smart phone as mobile hotspot for your private PC.

A PI (or a suspicious person) might also install hidden electronic surveillance to monitor your activities remotely or record them without actually physically following you...These are relatively cheap compared to the cost of a person following you about, and hard to detect.

Tiny cameras can be hidden anywhere. The room(s) you use to surf TERB may have a hidden camera installed to look over your shoulder at your computer monitor, or perhaps a hidden dash-cam type camera is mounted in your car to record your driving destinations.

"Never shit in your own backyard." Too easy to get busted by a chance encounter with someone you know. It happens.

Watch your financials carefully, do not create a suspicious trail of spending activity, make your withdrawal activity routine, modest, innocent looking.

Never stop looking over your shoulder. If you suspect anything suspicious, stop all activities immediately until you can confirm all-clear. Do not even bother initially trying to figure out if you are being followed, it does not matter, and chances are that you may never catch the followers, or find the hidden surveillance devices.. If you suspect for any reason someone is following or spying on you it means they are actively trying to collect evidence to be used against you for some purpose. Do not give them an opportunity to find any while you assess the situation.

PI's are not going to wire tap, they have no authority to do so, but turn off the GPS option on your phone as this can be used to track you, regardless if you have a burner phone or not. If you suspect that she has hired a PI, assume that this is already being done, so get a burner and as I stated, drive to a busy mall, park at one end, leave your everyday phone in the car with GPS on and go inside and exit at the far end, taking a cab to your destination.
Also, as stated, do not use a computer your wife has access to as spyware would have been installed, tracking what sites you go to and giving her the ability to open them up, even password protected sites like TERB.
They can also use a GPS tracker on your car, so the first point about parking and taking a cab is paramount.
Knowing a few PI's and hearing about such activities, these are simple yet effective ways of foiling their operations, making their job tougher and costing her more money in the process. As others have stated, watch your financials if using joint accounts and don't be seen withdrawing money where you can be spotted easily so that this can be recorded on film. On the same note, watch her financials, looking for similar activity like a large payment or withdrawal if you share joint accounts or credit cards, as this will be a tip off to you that something is amiss.
If she has hired PI's and you have been followed, they will book the same escort as you and intimidate her in a visit and with BP girls, this is easy to do, as they are just looking for validation of you having visited her and for what purposes (sex). They would visit her shortly after you have, showing her your picture and they try and come across as legit law. This is especially dangerous if you have a regular, as the pattern is already established and her memory of you is clearer, not muddled with a one off, revolving door girl.
Lay low in the meantime, like this may have been a one off if you already think it has happened.

As I said, I'm not a PI but I am lazy so I would let sell the know-how and let the spouse do the tracking. More that likely the car is communal property giving her the right to legally track it but I doubt if she cares if she is monitoring the phone illegally - ditto the car. Once you are caught - it's going to be a moot issue how you were caught.

As someone else mentioned there's a good chance that they would employ tracking devices or keystroke readers on your home computer.

Since you don't know what methods the person may be using you are best to stop suspicious activity without drastically changing your daily routines.

Only works if it is a single car following you. If they are using multiple cars its not that easy. While one car is behind you a few cars back on the street, the other car can be driving parallel to you on another street completely out of your sight. They are also going to drive common cars. How many silver vans will you see on a 10 minute drive down the DVP?
