Anyone here hire a maid at home? (I know that lots of people do in general.)

I'm thinking of getting a maid service to give my place a once over. I'm not particularly interested in having a maid service as an ongoing thing. Any tips on things to look out for / pitfalls etc?

Or should I just try to get a good-looking maid and hope for the best? :)

Seriously though, I get these flyers sometimes that advertise prices from $59 to $89. Are these prices fair? Are there things I should ask? Or just just say "Fark it" and take the plunge since it's less than $100?

I think they charge more for a one-time thing than if they're coming back continuously. A lot of the time they work in teams of 2+ people. In the past, I've found that the quality of the cleaning declines over time. Then you have to switch maids. ;)

I was thinking that maybe I'd get a maid
Find a place nearby for her to stay.
Just someone to keep my house clean-
Fix my meals and go away.
A maid-A man needs a maid.

Molly Maid was terrible for me also. I wanted a service that I could trust and allow them access to the house while I was at work. Paid $140 every 2 weeks and got nothing out of it. They broke stuff and tried to hide it, watched TV, moved things around, and then left notes like "sorry we couldn't clean this". They really just dusted and wiped the counters down. So now I'm back to cleaning up my own filth.

You also have to be careful not to leave any cash or easily removable valuables (like a laptop) lying around.

It is best using domestic help on an ongoing long term basis. And from my experience I have found that an independent lady is far more conscientious and a better bang for your buck over using a maid service,, though YMMV… My present housekeeper has been working for me for nearly fifteen years and is extremely dependable, keeps my house spotless from top to bottom, and even does the laundry. She spends about 10 hours per week on my home and I compensate her $200.00 US.

Before then I had a live in nanny for four years to help me look after my six-year old daughter. I’m a single parent. She insisted on doing all the housekeeping along with the laundry. Though I did the shopping and meal preparations. Her financial compensation was about the same. Plus she had free room and board, use of a car along with gas and repairs, and even yatch club privileges. I also paid for all her expenses on foreign travel and cruises. Though she was young and very beautiful, we had a totally above board and platonic relationship. While my daughter thought I should have married her, instead she fell in love with a man her age and moved on… Other than physical, I had all the advantages of being married. And even adding the expense of seeing the ladies in the region for that need, the arrangement was less expensive than having a wife. And no legal fees when she departed.

I may be able to recommend one for those living in the west-end of the city -if the inquiries are serious. Portugese lady, does house cleaning for a living.

private maids IMO provide the best service...tried molly maid once and they totally sucked...what i really don't like about maid services is that they don't appreciate you being home when they are working...screw that...but unfortunately they only work when I work :(

It's been good to know ya
I never hired a maid myself but have seen them in action. They are fast. I used to be the babysitter of 4 kids on my street and once a week the maids would come in and clean every room in the house. The instructions I got was to let the kids do what they wanted till the maids came. lol They were always the same maids and knew where everything went they washed and put everything away. I cannot say that I blame them for having the maids come in though with those kids and always taking them to sports and working and needing thier times out together too. They were one very very busy couple.

Those kids were very busy too with all thier sports equipment and throwing thier clothes around and the younger ones with mucking in other ways. She would just say sorry for the mess the maids are coming. I'd rather have someone come in and just do laundry and put away. They had it made though they brought all thier clothes home in bags from the dry cleaners even for thier kids. But, I am not complaining I got paid to sleep there till 3 or 4 in the morning while they had thier dates. There was never lack of going in and out in that house dropping off one child and picking up another. If you like to keep everyone in your house as busy as they did with work and all too and still keep the home fires buring I guess you require all these services.

Yes I did have a maid last year but the level of service when downhill and finally had to let her go. The thing I fine is that no one cleans the house as good as you so what I do is a lite cleaning during the week and on a Saturday or Sunday get up early and clean like heck That being sais how with the good weather coming it’s really hard to split the inside with the outside duties cut the lawn clean the windows etc etc the burdons we hve being single…lol
