Just found out my genetics suck and I need to be medicated, which I will start tomorrow. Anyone else? Not the greatest feeling when your doctor calls you in the middle of the day right after a blood test.

Rats - I'm in shape and am low on vices, minus a bit too much eating out. (or ordering in)

I suggest you Google Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr. He is a famous Cleveland Clinic doctor. He has several books. His program solved the problem for me.

I've been on Lipitor 40mg/day (max. dose) for the past 40+ years. No negative issues at all, and my cholesterol numbers were brought under control.

As a side benefit It's also an anti-inflammatory than helps prevent hardening of the arteries.

copied and pasted from Co-pilot AI:

"Lipitor helps lower LDL cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, but may cause muscle pain, digestive issues, and rarely liver damage.

How bad are your stats?

Realize once you go on, you can't go off.

A doctor tried to get me on them, but on my second visit I challenged him and he backed off the pills.

I'm waiting for him to email me my actual numbers, but he said I'm in the top 2%. He's a pretty chill doctor and he told me "you better not be inhaling anything"

Guess my occasional desire to smoke a joint is out the window. I prefer living.

Edit: LDL is near 8.0, normal is anything below 3. I'm at risk and understand it now.

Not even sure what top 2% means.

If they are legitimately bad numbers, then yes you will need statins.

I'd be more worried about food than smoking. You basically can't eat anything good tasting anymore. lol.

I control my cholesterol through diet and have had good success with keeping my levels in the green. As well regular exercise.

I've had to cut back on red meat consumption, eating only lean cuts of pork, chicken breast and thighs and legs without the skin. No processed food. Higher amounts of fibre also including psylium husk twice a day. Lots of veggies and fruit. I have vegetarian dishes on occasion. More good fats like nuts avocado or olive oil.

Eating out is very rare as that shit will skyrocket your levels. The occasional cheat is okay.

I've been managing it for about a year and a half, learning what works and what does not. I find cooking my own food really helps with regulating since I control what's going in it.

It's not as exciting as when I could stuff my face with little regard but if I want to cheat occasionally I do.

I've been on 2 meds for cholesterol for about 15+ years and they have done a good job for me. One way to possibly minimize or reduce the amount you take is slowly adjust your diet to healthier. If you're overweight losing excess weight can help lower your cholesterol (and BP) levels also. That may help but if not, the meds will definitely help you. Your doctor should retest you every 6 months until your cholesterol limits are reached/stabilized to acceptable levels and then about once every year.

My GP said it's 94% genetics, 6% food etc. I'm reasonably lean, (31 waist!) so this one isn't on obesity.

I am on blood pressure and colesterol meds, but my stats are near perfect. Blood pressure 115/80, heart beat 56/min. It was not always like that, there was a time when I would have an orgasm and hear my hartbeat in my head. that is a sure sign of high blood pressure. I went to see a doctor before I had a stoke and died in bed. Dying is easy, not dying is not too pleasant.

I don't have a cholesterol problem so much as I have a doctor telling me I have a cholesterol problem problem. It gets kind of annoying sometimes to be honest

Way back when, around age 35, I had my annual check-up with my GP. I was 15% overweight. My blood pressure was 140 over 100. My "bad" cholesterol was too high.

He said: "Lose weight and your numbers should improve. But in the meantime I'm putting you on a blood pressure pill and and Lipitor. Come back and see me in 6 months and we'll see how the weight loss is going. If your numbers improve we can lower, or even stop the pills."

Needless to say I didn't lose the weight, and have pretty much always been about 10% over my ideal.

I have stayed on the BP pills and Lipitor, and even at 80 years of age my BP is 115 over 75, and my cholesterol levels are fine.

I'm glad my GP was proactive in treating those conditions, and not just hoping I would fix the issues on my own...

What?

Do you think your doctor is just trying to aggravate you, and doesn't really have your health and well-being in mind?

Get your head out of the sand...

If your doctor is saying you have a problem, problem, he's trying to keep you alive so you don't die from a stoke or heart attack or clogged veins and arteries. Guess the question is do you want to live and keep having fun or stroke out?

Ok, so I can really contribute here. First of all, no direct connection has been established between high ldl cholesterol and the incidence of heart attacks. My family all have high cholesterol going back three generations with no heart health issues. But nevertheless, my cholesterol was at 6 and my doctor told me that he had to prescribe a statin in accordance with health guidelines. I came upon a reference to the efficacy of L. Taurine in improving the performance of the liver to metabolize lipids. Check out pubmed. I have been taking 3,000 mg per day of L. Taurine for the past 18 months and my total cholesterol is stable at 4.5. Lots of other health benefits for aging population, check it out

Take 12 minutes and give this a watch...Saladino is not a cardiologist but is extremely well read. He makes his initial footprint as a carnivore diet fan but has since moved off that for himself...anyways I just mention that for the naysayers.

Lp(a) and insulin resistance might have a greater impact on atherosclerosis than LDL alone.

This short video examines both sides of the argument...I personally don't think it's a one size fits all solution.

Do you know what your HbA1c level is?

Same as you, I was diagnosed with high LDL cholesterol and triglycerides a few years ago. I was eating well (almost never eating out/ takeout, eating basically a Mediterranean diet) fit (BMI 25, moderate intensity cardio 6-8 hours a week, plus a couple sessions of resistance training). At the same time I also was diagnosed with pretty bad hypertension. Got on blood pressure meds, which almost immediately got me immediately under control, and on a low dose of a statin. Last LDL was excellent. I do have some family history of coronary artery disease so I took this seriously, as I’m now in my 50s. As Bill Burr says, these are our “Drop Dead Years” for us men. It happens, usually in guys that abuse their bodies, but also in apparently healthy guys.

No side effects at all from the meds. Hopefully your family doc can sit down with you like mine did, look at your numbers and risk factors and give you an estimate of the potential benefit of going on meds. There are no guarantees either way, it’s about improving the odds.

Appreciated others and you talking about this. Im picking up my new meds later today. Not too fussed about all of this, mainly because I've already had my life pass before my eyes when I went through a brain tumor and surgery for it. All I gotta do here is take a pill and lay off all the Asian foods I love. I'll also increase my exercise too, which is well timed with the better weather hopefully here, today notwithstanding.
