I went into BB the other day with a gift certificate to blow and everything I was looking for was either sold out or unavailable. I could see this during X-mas, but that was 3 months ago. So the certificate just sits in my wallet...

For a computer purchase I always use an independant dealer, that has staff that know what they are talking about.

If Future Schlock is having a loss leader sale, I don't mind buying if I know what I want/need.

Staff are better at Best Buy, but I am getting pissed at paying, then having some jackass ask to look through my bag 5 seconds later. Despite selling Apple computer hardware, Best Buy does not carry any Mac software. DVD movies are sometime cheap.
Best Buy & Future shop are the same company. Same head office, and same training. When Best Buy came into Canada the bought Future shop but wanted to keep both names. It lets comsumers think the are getting a good deal shopping around.

Futureshop displays the employee commission right on the price tags; They are veiled with a letter and extra numbers...but it's there. The next time I go I will copy an example and post it. As you would guess the sales people will tell you that the items with the highest commission are the best products.
True, but Future Shop will be moving to a no-commission program in April sometime. Best Buy is already no commission. There are spiffs if you sell the warrany.

The reason people shop at these stores is because they are cheap. The fact is that these big box stores do run out of stock because so many "cheap" people shop there. First come, first serve!
The service there is lacking because the company is cheap too. The average clerk there probably makes little more than minimum wage and is given little or no training, when it comes to product knowledge.
Its best to do your own research and if you expect answers to all your questions, go to a specialty store and pay a little more for it.

nope the products with the biggest gross margins are usually the ones they push, not necessarily the highest price tag

mainly because the change over to everything best buy would cost a lot more versus just keeping things how they were now, and also due to what you said, makes it seem like competition to those who don't know.

some will remain on commission, different levels, but most of the employees will be on non-commission.
forgot what they called it, level 1, and level 2 reps, or something along those lines.

considering i worked for SHIT BUY not too long ago, part time, ill tell you this, the warranties are pushed by both stores.
shit buy, tends to exaggerate the truth about the manufacturers warranties, so thatll entice the customer to buy a PSP (performance serivce plan)...
load of shit, they pressured us more than future shop people, because they had incentive, they were on commission.
dont buy into that, "we're not on commission and were here to help" shit.
when management wasn't around, id always tell the customer NOT to buy it and buy the products on their visa, mastercard or american express card, because they would give any product you bought on it, an extra year warranty, call your credit card and find out.
i hated that they indirectly asked us to lie to customers.
also, monster cable, the brand they push most on customers, is a load of shit to...fancy packaging for nothing, acoustic research cables will be just fine.
monster cable products are marked up 50%
so what cost the customer $100 for a pair of cables, cost employees $50, hence they wanted us to push it on customers as well.
http://www.bestbuysux.org <-read the employee side =)

little bit of inside info, if you're ever in the store and you see the guy at the computer, checking for stock and/or prices
look at the lower left part of the screen, you'll see some numbers, that's the cost of the product ie-14584 = $145.84
if you want some bargaining leverage ;)
in case you guys missed it, trust me on this.

true, but gross margins or higher profit items = highest commissions, no ?

and yeah, I don't like the place. Ya can almost always get whatever you are looking to buy ( which hopefully isn't a stereo ) elsewhere cheaper.

Guys,

Extended warranties have lots of margin & they need to sell this stuff to remain profitable. Brand name computers have about 5% profit, Video products 20% (on average), and audio about 30% (equipment 25%, speakers 30-60%). Also accessories like "monster cable" or any thing esle is about 80-90% profit.

The actual cost that is displayed in the computer is what is refered to at the head office level as "commision cost". No one in the store knows the true cost. The company adds their overhead to the real cost to come up with the cost the store employee's see.

I would not say they )head office would want any employee lying to customer though. Suggesting customers to buy the higest margin/profit item is just good for business. No different in any retail enviroment.

I have been in this industy for over 15 yrs & closed many deals with these guys.

True,

My recomendation is to find the product you want (model number) and make a deal at a mom & pop shop. Tax in is a great deal on a TV or audio equipment.

Nope. A top sales rep can make $60,000, and a store manager can make $120,000  if they meet their targets. Unfortunaly commission will be going, but the manager will make big bucks.

i got that, but what they tell them in morning meetings sometimes indirectly is to push the bigger gross margin items, the stores compete with each other and hence need to those items sold to come out on top.

Are you kidding? I think I will be quiting my job at the bank to be a sales rep at FutureShop or Best Buy. Believe it or not, our branch manager who is also the manager of sales and service only makes $70,000-$80,000 per year including commission on a good year. And that is taking into consideration he has won a few awards for top sales in the region.

I hate Best Buy as well

While BestBuy is owned by the same, they're sales staff is at least non-commissioned and a bit more helpful.
I recently bought a cheapo DVD player at Best Buy for a spare room in my house. (I already had a high-end setup in my family room.) When I got it home, it didn't work properly. You could actually hear something loose inside the case. It had been an "open box" item at the store. I asked what that meant before I bought it and was assured that it just meant it had been opened in the store and not that it was a customer return. The "open box" price, in this case, was $5 less than than the normal price.

When I returned the DVD, I asked to exchange it. They said fine, but they'd have to charge me the extra $5 because they didn't have any more open box items! This could not have been a more stupid customer relations move! I pointed out:

1. The inconvenience of attempting to setup and then having to return the defective machine was worth more than $5 to me.
2. The irritation of waiting in the return line and then having to have an argument when all I wanted was straight exchange was worth more than $5.

The moron store manager then tried to give me some "pat" line they, no doubt, taught him to say in manager school that "he didn't have to do a straight exchange, but he was going to do it for me, but it was really costing the store money to do it". Rather than making me feel grateful for his $5 generosity, it just irritated me more that he was prepared to insult my intelligence with such a stupid gambit. They did the straight exchange, but totally convinced me that I should never buy anything that was actually valuable at that store.

The moral is - you might save some money at these stores if you know exactly what you want, they have it in stock, and it works perfectly when you get it home. However, God help you if you need some advice to make your purchase, or something is wrong with what you bought.

I said top sales people. You have to know how to close sales. And yes this is a skill that earns $60,000. As for the store manager $120,000 is not an easy task. You have to get a whole team of people (25+ people) to exceed their sales tagets. There are people there that can not sell, and they will make nothing and the company will get rid of them. Can not blame them they are in the sales business.
