Tchaikovsky's magnificent symphonic poem "Manfred" is in my view his
most underrated work. It has all the elements like lush melodies
and drama that make his other symphonies popular. And yet none of T's
symphonies came close to Manfred's dramatic tension and excitement IMO.
Leonard Bernstein thought Manfred was a piece of trash. He might have
changed his view if he had a chance to hear Toscanini's hair-raising performance
of Manfred with the banal parts trimmed off. Manfred is a rather long
work running about 50--55 minutes. If you like me are left shattered by
the anguish and the grandeur of the final 5 minutes of the work you may
find listening to the entire work an unforgettable experience.

I imagine Italian and French composers are most prone to
be charmed by the fairer sex. Some of the most ravishing melodies
from films like Georges Delerue's music for the films of BB and
Ennio Morricone's Lady Caliph theme for Romy Schneider
and Cristina's theme for Daniela Bianchi were apparently
product of inspiration by the charm of the most beautiful
women on screen.

The vastly underrated composer with the impossible name to spell, played by a legend I once met.

On March 21, 1885, Dvorak's Symphony No. 7 was performed for the first time. Johannes Brahms, a Dvorak fan, attended the event and declared it magnificent.

Music of a madman?

The Rite of Spring

Igor Stravinsky

When first performed , the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a sensation and a near-riot in the audience.

It is widely considered to be one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century.

Ravel decided to write a piece based on the musical form and Spanish dance called bolero. Ravel went to the piano and played a melody with one finger to his friend Gustave Samazeuh, saying "Don't you think this theme has an insistent quality? I'm going to try and repeat it a number of times without any development, gradually increasing the orchestra as best I can."

Stunning interpretive dance

Maya Plisetskaya was former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi.

I find myself curious as to why the greatest composers are dead and existed when there were so few educated people.

Todays great musicians go into rock or jazz.

"Vide Cor Meum" (The Burning Heart) is a song composed by Patrick Cassidy based on Dante's "La Vita Nuova", for the Movie Hannibal as he stalks his next victim

"Dude where's my arpeggio"

Claude Debussy was a stoner. He was a member of the Hashish Club, other members included Paul Gaugain, Honore de Balzac and Victor Hugo.

Interesting

I saw a doc on dope

They had painters paint when they were stoned and they all thought they were being very creative

when they saw their paintings the next day they thought their paintings were silly

I see no relationship between being stoned and being creative

Heroin is another story
