Went to get consults with three different pharmacists this morning on BPH drugs - two of them were male and when I explained to them that I was concerned about these drugs and possible negative effects on sexual function, they were both interested in helping me by spending the time to look up each drug's side effects profile and other info. The 3rd pharmacist was a female and her consult was by far the shortest. She did not look up anything for me and just didn't seem very interested in helping me.

Anyway, I found out that Flomax has a potential of 8-18% rate of sexual dysfunction. Rapaflo has an even higher rate. Meanwhile, Xatral's rate is only 1-2% which is a HUGE difference. All three seem to be equally effective and similar in cost so this may suggest that Xatral is the clear winner. The 2 guys also mentioned that the 5 mg Cialis is also a potential whereas the woman pharmacist didn't even mention it. When I asked all of them about any patient feedback, the woman just said the customers never come back to them with issues.

The third pharmacist sounds like she really can't be bothered to do her job or perhaps she is resentful of all the help out there for 'male' issues. I think the joke is that whenever there is any sort of male reproductive issue, doctors and scientists are all over it to find a cure or treatment. If it's a female issue, then the same urgency just isn't there. I am making this statement through the female perspective as I have heard this many times. So maybe this pharmacist feels the same.

I failed to mention this earlier but I began using the Cialis 5mg after my urologist gave me a one month sample pack to try. Perhaps you can ask yours if he has a free sample for a month to try it out before paying for the actual prescription (assuming that you do not have coverage as I do not).

That's a great idea! Just hope that the 5 mg Cialis is as effective as Flomax, Rapaflo and Xatral in managing the BPH symptoms - we already know it's good for ED.

For me, it was just as effective as the Flomax but my BPH symptoms were not very severe. Maybe needed to get up twice a night to pee but I also realized that I am a poor sleeper as well so I think that many times, I didn't wake up to pee, I just peed because I was awake, if that makes sense.

To add something to this conversation, I am a die hard Howard Stern fan and I listen to him on satellite radio all the time. He is presently going through his BPH issues and talks about it quite openly. He said something the other day that his doctor advised him of that I am currently trying. His problem is that he feels the need to pee 15 minutes after he just peed, and this is my problem a lot of times, especially in the mornings. The problem is that I gave in to the pressure to pee by going every 15 minutes. Now my body got used to that. Stern's dr told him to re-train his body by waiting 30 minutes when you get the urge to pee, i.e. hold it in. I just started doing this yesterday so I cannot say for certain that it works just yet but it does make sense and I will continue and see if there is a difference.

I feel that too lately but not every 15 minutes, maybe every hour. Keep us updated on your progress

Yes but it can be like taking a daily vitamin and the pharmacist told me that at age 65, most BPH meds are covered (but not Cialis)
Helpful life style suggestions:
Caffeine is a diuretic promoting urination. Switch to decaf if you consume coffee or tea.
Tobacco and sugar invite consumption of water due to osmosis. Cut out/reduce intake of both
Exercise, lose weight
Good luck

Just an update- saw my urologist for the first time and since I was getting up 4-5 times per night, I asked for bph meds. He offered Flomax as I had expected but I said when I read the product monograph for it I was concerned about the 8-18% chance of sexual side effects whereas another alpha blocker (same class as Flomax) called Xatral had virtually none. He had no issues giving me that one so I just started taking it. I felt a difference with even just after the first dose already as I got up only twice the first night and the flow of me pee felt stronger. The second night I got up twice as well but they were further apart in time as the second time was almost morning. I’m quite impressed with Xatral so far and it was dirt cheap too with the generic costing about $8 per month plus pharmacy dispensing fee. I hope my symptoms will be controlled enough with just the Xatral as I am not keen on adding the next class of drugs which try to shrink my prostate as they do apparently have significant sexual side effects
