Tried spybot and malwarebytes. The former took up a lot of my time and in the end asked for a payout. I also suspect a lot of false positives. I didn't pay. The uninstall did appear to go without a problem

Malwarebytes, on the other hand, was faster and simpler to work with. Then too it is completely FREE! I used this program and my computer is now much faster than before. Of course, I still had to play thru a video once to get the video to play the second time.

I have used (in order) over the years Norton, McAfee, Panda, AVG, Kaspersky, Avira and currently I use Avast.

I like free so AVG, Avira and Avast are my faves.

They sell other stuff to

They try to 'upgrade' you to the paying 'professional' versions and commercial apps of their AV always cost money. They also sell other software besides AV. Lately they try to trick you into paying for their AV when you have to renew it. So be careful what you click on when you have to renew the free versions.

I had problems with the three A's...now I use Comodo based on someone's suggestion here on Terb. After 3 months so far so good....

We have one old machine running Win 98. AVG no longer supports Win 98. I dont want to upgrade to XP cuz we will have to upgrade the version of the warehouse s/w as well with another license.

Anyone know of a free AV that still runs on Win 98?

Avast by default comes with a 60 day demo.
All you need do is contact Avast as directed and they will instantly send you the license key good for a year for free. Takes <1 minute to do.

After the 1 year expires, you can just re-register for another year and so on.

Correct.
Recently had to renew both my laptop and desktop for another free year of Avast. Avast sent the new key and used it on both.
