Hi,

I've used Norton's but found that it slows down my computer. I've heard that McAfee is not very good. I'm looking for a good alternative. Any recommendations?

The two highest-rated products are Bit Defender and Kaspersky. Kaspersky is always rated at the very top of the list. Google anti virus and you will find the test results.

AVG is free for home/indvidual users. For business/corporate clinets they charge. I use the product, and am very pleased. I have recommended it to many clients, and have never encountered issues or failed detections.

Avast

Avast is highly rated and free. Been using it since 2006 with no problems.
Always used the free home version but there are other versions of Avast they try upgrading you to that you have to pay for.

The latest version of Norton 2009 is said to run lean and good. It's not the resource hog Norton was in the past. I used to use Norton till dumping it for Avast. I'll stick with Avast.

AVG, can't go wrong with that as others have indicated. Yes, it's free. Just download the free version.

I prefer Avast over AVG.

Keep your eyes open next boxing day. I picked up Kaspersky from Best Buy for $14.

If you check the PC magazine web site, Norton is a consistent Editor's Choice.
Norton 360 3.0 is supposed to be less of a drain on the computer.

I just installed AVG. It didn't remove all the adware. I still have that fucking 'Personal Antivirus' that I'm trying to remove.

AVG is for virus protection and removal not spyware/adware. To remove adware/spyware, download and install spybot. Then boot into safe mode, and run a scan. If you don't do it in safe mode, you may leave spyware on your system.

I was put onto AVG a long time ago, but this local computer center switched me over to Norton. I started to have problems, but since switching back to AVG I've not had problems with viruses tho I suspect some adware/spyware is present in my computer. I have tried Lavasoft Adaware. This did find one "object" but recommended I keep it for now. Next time I scan, tho, I'll remove it. I'll try spybot, which I tried quite awhile ago, and that other malwhatever.

I read where spybot can be difficult to uninstall. I can't back out now since I already installed it. But the rest of you may want to reconsider that approach.

AVG is free for one home computer. If you have a second one, you have to pay for the second installation.

Works for me.

I have 7 computers all running AVG without have to purchase anything.
