Fuck, that is shocking, apparently suicide. I really liked Bourdain - his show elevated the food show genre and he always seemed to “get it”. The guy could interview everybody from Iggy Pop to a Trump supporter in rural Kentucky, breaking bread and getting along (and getting great insight too). He will be missed.

RIP....

Another suicide. Very sad. With all that we try to do to bring awareness so that people don't feel this is their only way out, really seems like it is no where near enough considering this is two in a week. I mean, I know there have been more this week, just two that we heard about because of their social status.

This just goes to show that suicide and mental health affect everyone no matter your age, race, sexual orientation, gender, religious affiliations. This is a world wide human problem. Very sad indeed.

Well said Jessica... The sadness you speak of when you say "with all we try to bring awareness so that people don't feel this is their only way out" ... I use to volunteer at an outreach program and what I would often hear was that in spite of all that is available to help those in need and with networks of people who want to help and support them ..... They still feel so very alone.... I wish I knew what "Magic Bullet" approach could be used to to help those who find themselves in their deepest despair.... Thanks for sharing Jessica

One of the reasons that people still feel alone is that there is a detachment that takes place with something like depression. You literally don't feel connected to the world mentally and even physically. Looking out of your own eyes is like you're looking through a thick wall of glass. You feel completely disconnected from everything/everyone around you and it's a really lonely state to be in.

I thought Bourdain was CNN's best journalist (not just a tv personality) and his shows were more documentaries that happened to feature food. A lot of his critics viewed him as a rampant "leftie", but his views were more libertarian and he saw, met, and ate with people from all walks of life and all sides of the political spectrum (and he always treated them with respect and got respect back.) He was a reformed addict, so has had a lot of dark periods in his life.

His long-time friend Chef Eric Ripert is the one who found him. Feel really badly for Ripert, who by all accounts is just a really good person and was a great friend for many, especially Bourdain. Really sad news.

Having had depression for years, the thought has entered my mind, ive even gone so far as to google methods but that feels like a grand Canyon sized leap to finally take action.

I loved his show, he had a way of connecting with people on their terms..... and he made me hungry.

Like Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, Anthony Bourdain was a heroin addict, he admitted it during a tour of his birth state NJ. Withdrawal from heroin isn't as physically gruesome as alcohol but its psychological scars are deep. PSH could no longer get enough of a high from acting and directing, similarly Bourdain could no longer get enough of a high from traveling. Maybe there's something to that line about the pleasure of 1000 orgasms, that Ewen MacGregor says in Trainspotting.

I'll miss him, enjoyed his show. And he was getting ready to marry Asia Argento...apparently not enough of a high.

This is terrible. Big fan of his, both as a journalist and a chef. I’m not terribly surprised, unfortunately, though. Bourdain always seemed like a man who had his demons. He never did seem quite genuinely happy to me. I’d always thought he was likely going to go young though I’d hoped I was wrong.

Unfortunately, we’re still not very good at dealing with mental health issues. We stigmatize mentally ill people to the point that they don’t want to get help, and often help isn’t there to be gotten. We don’t take it seriously because I guess we feel like there isn’t anything physically wrong with them so they should just suck it up, but it really doesn’t work like that. I get very real physical symptoms from my anxiety, I know people with depression who are basically unable to function many days. This is really not an issue we can continue to just write off.

Phillip Seymour Hoffmann was working on a film adaptation of The Long Red Road when he passed away. Michael Shannon had already commited to the project.

PSH fell off the wagon and we missed seeing two of the most exciting actors currently working because of it, working together on the film. Like PSH, like Anthony Bourdain - what a waste!

What a terrible shock. I feel like I knew him through Parts Unknown. His show was a real gem.
