The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says another southern Ontario farm has been placed under quarantine because of the bird flu.

The agency says the H5N1 strain of avian influenza was confirmed in a poultry farm in the Township of Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation on Thursday.

It says control measures to limit the movement of animals in the area have also been put in place.

The bird flu has ripped through three other commercial poultry farms in southern Ontario in less than a week, according to the CFIA.

Those cases were detected after a red-tailed hawk in the Waterloo, Ont., region was found with bird flu 10 days ago.

The CFIA says 24 countries have temporarily banned imports of birds or poultry products from parts of Canada - and in some cases, from the whole country - as a result of the outbreaks.

A farm stakeholder group has said Canada's poultry production is largely for domestic use.

To date, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have been detected in U.S. wild birds in 14 states and in commercial/backyard poultry in 13 states.

Things like "bird flu" and "swine flu" refer to the animal reservoirs they normally are found in, not their exclusivity to that animal.

Bird Flu (HPAI H5N1)(Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1) is mostly in birds. Carried mostly by infected wild birds. If a chicken gets infected it usually wipes out the majority of the farm stock, and can travel to surrounding farms and continue. Major biosecurity measures are put in place to contain outbreaks, usually destroying chickens in a large surrounding radius.
It can be transmitted to humans, but generally requires prolonged and intimate contact with an infected bird (not sexual, although this is terb.....). A lot of asian cultures have live animal in close proximity to humans and also live markets. Years ago there was a major concern in China, Indonesia, etc. 60% of people hospitalized died.
Fortunately the mechanism of infection in humans prevents it from transmitting person to person, so far. As you learned with covid, viruses mutate.
If it ever fully crosses, covid would be a walk in the park by comparison. It would require a significant mutation to do so, and has not done so in over 10 years so far.
The outbreak also caused a shortage of chickens and eggs in Asia for well over a year.
