I'd like to thank the Harper government for changing the criminal code. This degenerate should be locked up for life but 41 years before being eligible for parole is satisfactory.

Here
Great now we have to feed and shelter him,pay his med. and dental, he will be moved to an minimum security prison in 10yrs or so where he will get to go shopping and play sports. and BBq with his buddies. This will have cost tax payers almost 5 million. not allowing for inflation. Death penalty is much cheaper.

I don't support the death penalty. And it's proven itself to be a more expensive option for many US states. Furthermore, I highly doubt this guy would be transferred to any minimum security facility.

Now we should apply these same penalties to white collar criminals who actually cause way more damage to society.

Like the scammers who collapsed the world economy in 2008 and walked away unscathed and carried on. This would seem appropriate for some of themhttps://books.google.ca/books?id=BR_WBQAAQBAJ&pg=PT502&lpg=PT502&dq=english+coin+makers+castrated&source=bl&ots=0RIqK9_TSj&sig=kgE-jzFzECK5ckpe-EQ2KmFTxbI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjPyp-d85TaAhVN4WMKHeYYC1wQ6AEIczAM#v=onepage&q=english%20coin%20makers%20castrated&f=false

Exactly white collar crime has way more impact on society than any other crime. Violent crime can arouse emotion more than anything, making it perfect for headlines.

In some cases for sure, I would say the principal should be you make restitution at 3x stolen or lost, and what you cannot pay is converted to time at a rate of $500K/year to a max of 20 years.

There is a huge problem when it costs over $100K to house a prisoner for a year. There's something wrong with the prison system if the costs are that high. So yes, long sentences economically suck for Joe Taxpayer. They should honestly come up with ways to lower the cost significantly or make the prisoners work and the money earned is poured into the prison system to defray the cost.

I'm all for capital punishment. And not that "let's wait 18 years before we get around to it". If it's a done deal. Done. Dead in 30 days. On to the next subject.

Now the problem with that is the small chance he or she actually innocent.

To get around that, the evidence has to be so substantial and in modern age the proof can be provided. Unlike decades ago where you hear about some guy unjustly locked up for 50 years because despite no evidence, the judge and jury thinks he's guilty because some white guy in Mississippi claims he saw him do it from 100 yards away.

If the facts are so concrete and someone does a serious crime, that's the end of it.

Not only does it help out the economy a bit better, but let's face it. Some guy locked up for 40 years isn't going to contribute one bit to society when he's let out anyway. Right away, he'll be on social assistance. And for the guys put away for life, he won't be contributing anything to society either. And repeat offenders occur because a crook got out and does it again and again.

The less prisoners, the less money spent on security, the less need for guards. Fewer guards means more of them getting jobs being productive earning society revenue or services instead of standing around all day getting paid to guard crooks.
