How much "law and order" in the world do you see as a result of American actions today?

I'm not talking about decades ago (Marshall Plan, NATO, Peace Corps, UN, etc) ... I mean TODAY.
Actually, the Marshall plan was just a campaign to save Turkey and Greece from the communist yoke, AND to get Europe hooked on (American-controlled) oil, instead of coal-burning plants. I was NOT a charity.

McCain loan could violate donor privacy
By: Kenneth P. Vogel
January 10, 2008 06:49 PM EST

When John McCain’s presidential campaign all but went broke, it borrowed money from its bank using its fundraising list as collateral.

Problem: McCain’s own privacy policy promises donors he won’t sell their information.

That seems to put the Republican senator's campaign in a pickle; either it pledged to its bank proceeds from something it can’t sell, or it offered to violate its own promise to donors.

McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker stressed that the campaign pledged all of its assets as collateral, not just the list.

“Such a blanket pledging,” she said, “is normal procedure for a bank loan — and does not mean that they can [or] would ever be used in any way that violates our policies.”

The privacy policy on Arizona Republican's website states: “John McCain 2008 will not sell your information to third parties or any commercial entities.”

Fundraising lists are valuable political commodities, since they offer the possibility of millions of dollars in contributions. And campaigns routinely rent or trade them.

McCain’s use of his list as collateral, however, could open the unlikely possibility of donors suing his campaign for breach of contract.
Hey but McCain is a real banker's kind of guy, after all, he was one of the Keating 5.

Nice job, John.

However, some might ask, "Why the hell is a bank loaning someone money, when they put up their list as collateral"? Haven't banks made enough bad loans for a while?

McCain is not another Bush. His policies have consistently been a lot more sane and well thought out. He has a good voting record in the senate. He appeals strongly to "centrist" Americans, and not to the extremes of his party (he made some lame attempt to reach out to the religious right, but everyone knows he was having to reach.)

Partisans who hate anyone who is on the right may not see that, and may abhor ANY republican, but it's the truth.

I'm not sure I'd prefer a democrat in the US presidency. I would if I were an American, but I'm not, I'm a Canadian. Democrats might have social policies I agree with more, but why would that matter to ME? The republicans are more likely to advance free trade, which benefits Canadians. The Democrats are more likely to close the border to Canadian firms. Why would a Canadian therefore prefer a Democrat in the whitehouse????

I'd say it's knowing when to bend, not if to bend, that is the best sign of a leader.

If McCain was a quitter he had plenty of reason and opportunity to do so in the past year after it appeared his campaign had tanked. He's slightly ahead in Michigan, and with any luck will send Romney packing, for which you should thank him. He's also got small leads in South Carolina and now Florida, where Gulliani had been leading by double digits for months. Better get used to it pappy. McCain could well be the Republican standard bearer.

You want to support him then declare your support..........I for one abandoned him in 2001...........If he can show cause for the past 7 years I will listen..........In the interim you can support this fraud.

Geez pappy, calm down. I was simply pointing out that as the good Republican that you are, you might have to acknowledge that he is the choice of your party. Considering who you guys got this year you could do alot worse, and still may.

There haven't been any plan Bs in Iraq and Afghanistan
until recently.
That last sentence has an internal conflict, I would agree that Bush and Rumsfeld were too slow to take advice on increasing troop strength (they should have listened to JM). Hopefully you'll have an equally scathing critique of those who wanted to rush to retreat claiming the war was no winnable.
