For those of you who are thinking of buying the latest and greatest Android phone you better make sure that you're happy with the current version of Android because it is highly likely that it will also be the last version of Android it will run. It turns out that Android phone makers are terrible at keeping up with the versions:



Compare that with the fact that all four versions of the iPhone can still run the latest iOS. Here is the original article:

What should be added is, Apple had 4 phones to worry about, Google`s Android, "hundreds" as the article points out.
Things are still incredibly early and while I`m not fan of either company to be honest, I`d rather choose the devil that I do know, in this case, Android.
...reasons being...
-microSD, excellent multi-tasking, drag`n`drop (love this ability)......and while not OVERLY important, it`s nice to be able to customize things on your own phone, even the wallpaper, how sad. lol

As far as I'm aware, google provides the code for new versions to handset manufacturers who have to decide whether/how to apply the latest version to their phones. The providers such as bell then are the ones who put out the update.

In other words, it's an issue with the handset manufacturers and service providers rather than google. Of course since open source creates a wide range of modifications it makes uniformity impossible.

Or you could go to a place like xda dev forums and get whatever android version or flavour you want.

XDA DEV forums, the "Genius Bar" equivalent, except you don't have to leave your house and can do the fix yourself quickly, if you're intelligent enough.
If not, just buy from the store, turn on whatever you bought and be happy with its limits. :)

True. And handset manufacturers make custom modifications to Android, so they can't be simply upgraded by downloading the latest Android from Google. Android itself is not a problem, it's this customisation by phone makers. Plus for Apple. Probably the only one I would give them. Multitasking for me is a must, as well as the ability to replace battery and microSD. Without these simple options, no way I would ever buy Apple. Just for the record, I'm not Google fan by any means.

I'm in the very same boat. I can't imagine not being able to pop in a card with documents, music and wallpapers (for customization if/whenever I want it).

What versions are the phones in stores running now?
Because the S2 was f'in slick, fast, snappy and THAT'S WITH the Telus, Hell, Robbers themed out phones.
Can't imagine what custom ROMS will be like. :eek:

I really am fighting off getting an S2, that phone is mind blowing.

Or the lack of microSD slot in an iPhone?

Macs have SD slots
SD slots on phones are a stupid idea, like floppy drives....
Customize my phone, it's a phone.... I can add hundreds of thousands of apps from a secure place....
I can run current software, something that Android buyer's can't because of Google's business model of leaving the carrier in control.
I can drag and drop files, it's called dropbox

A customized phone stuck in the past.... talk about planned obsolescence

I just copied 4 video filesand some music from a friend's laptop a few days ago, onto the card. Ya, stupid idea.
(no USB key on me at the time, but the phone was and as was the microSD card)

We're talking about dragging and dropping files within your iPhone, not a cloud based system - ANYONE can use that service (up to 2Gs free).
Microsoft, Android, iPhone, BlackBerry users can all use DropBox, nothing exclusive to iPhone about that.

Apple’s “fake multitasking” sucks for 2 reasons. For one, it’s not real multitasking because not all apps can take advantage of it.
Sure you can argue that multitasking drains the battery, but that’s not the point here.
Second reason why multitasking on the iPhone 4 sucks is because it quickly gets ugly in your app switching dock since Apple doesn’t kill apps until the OS deems it necessary.
At any time I have between 10 and 20 apps in my app switcher, making it very busy.


Battery replacement? Waste some gas, drive to the store, wait for a "genius" to help you out, only to tell you that they'll take your phone and see what's going on.
Wait a few days (without a phone, unless you get a loaner?), waste some more time and gas, pick up your phone... ehhh, get an extra battery if you're having problems or need a backup. Very convenient, less hassle.

Options are nice to have, much like having your phone capable of playing flash (ie - Android based phones) with an OPTION to turn it off.
Or an SD option, don't HAVE to use it, but why not let the user decide if they want to or not?

Apple caved on the SD slot for a LAPTOP, like i said, talk about control issues.
What was the big deal about having an SD slot on a laptop?? lol

Obviously someone who knows nothing about android. Some of the oldest android phones are running the latest version of android. Why? OPEN SOURCE. People customize their own roms to run on whatever phone they want. Does apple have that? Oh wait, apple likes to control what people have and dont have. Enough said.
