You can stream IPTV through the android box. I recommend IPTV as opposed to just a box.
Can you clarify? I saw a presentation of IPTV and it looked great but I was not sure what the difference was between IPTV with the specific box that they sell to you and monthly fees of $10 to $20 per month vs. the Android Boxes that are being discussed above.

My friend gifted me an XBMC box a couple of years ago. I didn't use it, but he took it back and got me an updated box which I will connect. I haven't delved into that yet, and not sure if it's the same type from XBMC, but he says it's smaller and better.

I also have a Smart TV that I won at a stag but haven't hooked up yet (I don't get around to watching a lot of TV).

You don't even need a box, you can install freetelly (kodi) on your computer and connect your computer to a TV or a large monitor.
Yes, this is a great option as well. If you go to tvaddons.ag they provide instructions on how to download on almost any device. This site is run by the people that created KODI.

There is however a benefit with the Android box. The experience is similar to using your cable provider box. Also, they have now made KODI and app so it runs a lot smoother than just installing the program.

Whether you use an android box or load Kodi on a PC, should you have them run the streaming through a VPN?

I have a box that runs Kodi. If your a movie guy, series guy, PPV guy and can work your way around online streaming sites, this box will be a breeze for you. I picked mine up for 100. But like others have pointed out, you can do the same thing on your laptop and buy an hdmi cord to plug into your tv and it works the same way. Kodi Box is a lot smaller and more convenient imo.

I had to look up KODI but if I have an XBMC box, then I guess that's what I use (sorry, haven't hooked it up yet).

I use a Raspberry Pi running OSMC which is based around KODI. Have one on each TV in the house. Remote control is breeze using an app on our cellphones, just pick the Pi for the room you are in and away you go.

You guys all must have unlimited data plans? I haven't used my Smart TV or box yet, but I guess I should check with my ISP. Some of you guys are really state of the art.

How are these boxes for searching programs, live sports etc. Most of the content we watch is in HD. I do like my Rogers HD-PVR, TV guide, the ability to automatically record new programs and I can also record up to 8 programs simultaneously. How do these compare?

Live sports is still the biggest gap. Anything that can be downloaded like a movie or TV show you can get but there's limited streaming of live sports and it's not always reliable. I believe we will see big progress in this area in the next while. You will of course have to pay a premium to stream the good stuff.

So the one valid remaining reason to have a cable subscription is if you watch more live sports than you could get over the air with an antenna.

Or the news.

So you can get EVERY current show with an Android box too?

I like the box too, as it comes with a remote and I like flipping channels.

For international news its great, you can get all kinds of stations and languages. For local live TV its not so good, but you can get a simple antenna and catch many local stations.

Yeah but the iptv box is live tv with a guide and a movie channel with about 1800 movies. Also there is a pvr that records all channels for a week and you get nfl ticket and a slew of sports channels.

I used my smartphone and laptop for a while to run Kodi. I would cast my smartphone screen to my TV which was a bit more glitchy due to the wireless connection. Recently got an X96 Android box with S905X CPU and 2GB ram loaded with Kodi, IPTV and other streams setup. Has a remote and also bluetooth keyboard. I'm subscribing for iptv for basically $15/mo. I know there are cheaper subscriptions available but I'm very satisfied with what I'm getting. This works much better and I'm very pleased with the number of TV channels and quality. Yep some of the brand new current movies may be low quality but I would say in general any movie thats been in the theatres for say 2+ weeks can usually be found in decent quality on Kodi. Dropped my Rogers cable to basic so I'm saving some money. Of course there is still some occasional glitches like buffering/freezing. Just a minor irritation sometimes. After all, its a computer in a small box.
On another note, Can any of you guys explain how you can record an iptv channel that youre watching? i.e What output device? PVR or External H/D? and do I need to install additional software on the box etc. I've got 2 usb, 1 hdmi and 1 optical out available on my box.
