Giamatti thanks 'great nation of Canada' as he wins Globe for 'Barney's Version'

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF.—Paul Giamatti thanked the family of Mordecai Richler and the city of Montreal on Sunday night as he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy for “Barney's Version.”

“This was an extraordinary movie to be a part of and people busted their asses to get it made,” Giamatti said as he accepted the award from presenter Halle Berry, noting he was “jacked up” from eating too many of the Godiva chocolates handed out at the ceremony.

“I got to smoke and drink and get laid in this movie and I got paid for it ... amazing.”

It took producer Robert Lantos over 10 years to turn Richler's sprawling novel into a film.

Giamatti lauded Lantos and expressed gratitude to the family of the late author, who died in 2001.

“I also want to make sure to thank the incredible family of Mordecai Richler who let me stomp around in their private lives, which was very kind of them,” he said.

He also gave a shout out to the film's “incredible” crew in Montreal, where the film — which also stars Dustin Hoffman, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike — was shot.

“An incredible beautiful city which I dream about,” Giamatti said.

“An incredible place in a great nation, Canada. And I salute the great nation of Canada.”

Nice to hear that he enjoyed working in Montreal.

I love movies that are set in Canada. (If you saw Chloe by Atom Egoyan it was set in Toronto and did not hide the fact that it was indeed set in Toronto)

I wonder if part of his contract was a couple of French girls to lay him daily.

I missed the GGA, but THAT'S a movie I must see. Kudos to Canada's Robert Lantos, a great filmmaker. Thank you Paul Giamatti.

I for one couldn't give a rat's ass what americans or any other country for that matter thinks of us,I have no need for hteir approval in any way. So many Canadians seem to get so excited when we are noticed by Americans.

This sums it up. Remember that wikileaks stuff about Canadians having an inferiority complex? It's true.

Having a miserable life on this planet are we? Interesting how people interpret certain thiings in life, you interpret his kind words towards Canada as some form of approval of Canadians. I on the other hand simply looked at it as a guy who spent some time in Canada, had a great time and thank us for our hospitality, nothing more.

'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' was like that as well. I actually enjoyed both Chloe and Scott Pilgrim. Odd, particularly with the number of restaurant / club scenes in Chloe, to say, "Oh, I've been / eaten / drunk there."

Now we have insight into why your life is so miserable; a Debbie Downer much.

Inferiority complex?

Paul Giamatti is a class act and he's come a long way since Pig Vomit in Howard Stern's Private Parts.

Inferiority complex...hardly. I got offended when a poster, on another board, compared Kevin James, KEVIN FUCKING JAMES, to John Candy. And scenes of Toronto was not the reason why I watched Chloe.

I agree completley that that is what Mr. Giamatti's comments meant. MY comment is not about Mr. Giamatti's comments about us, but instead the fact that some Canadians feel the need to jump for joy that he made the comment at all.

Notice us! Notice us!

Its the same thing with the European disapproval of the seal hunt. WHO CARES WHAT THEY THINK? Let them huff and puff all they want, just ignore 'em.

I think he approves of us politically and socially too (when you refer to us as the 'nation of Canada', it's more than just hospitality I think). The U.S. are lucky we are good neighbours.

Coming from an American on a global television program, it means a lot. Otherwise, they don't give a fuck about us most of the time when they should. We're a good neighbour to the north, and we're not just drawers of water and hewers of wood. We have literary artists and great filmmakers here too amongst other things. Canada has shown it has their own voice in the global political arena when we didn't join the U.S. in Iraq. So we don't need their approval, but appreciation and thanks is another thing.

I thought it was very cool of him - Giamatti, to say what he said. It has nothing to do with anything related to an "inferiority complex". In fact, most Americans often say that Canada has a "Superiority Complex". Even OTB on this forum has said that Canadians think that they are superior to Americans.

I give Giamatti marks for saying what he said.

Contrast him to all the CONSTANT negative shit about Canada that comes out of the USA from the likes of Robert Duvall (who never has a good thing to say about working in Canada), or all the American politicians (Hilary Clinton even) who said that the 911 Terrorists came to the US via Canada, or Fox News, hell, even the Buffalo News. Even South Park took the "Blame Canada" theme and ran with it for years. You get sick and tired of being blamed for everything from blackouts to Terrorists to ruining Vietnam.

Good on Paul Giamatti.
