I went grocery shopping this morning. I was really surprised that most of the produce was from China! Apples from China, garlic from China, Smoked Salmon from China! You can't get any good homegrown produce anymore or it's rare and hard to find.

Fiddleheads are just finishing up and asparagus is going now.
Nothing else is in season in Ontario.

I can't even find good food imported from California or other parts of the USA. It's all from China now.

Within 10 years, China will control over 50% of the resource based sector in N. America and is poised to take over the agricultural sector too. The largest pork producer in America, Smithfield will likely be acquired by China this year. Clearly America is on the decline and China is on the upswing although both countries are partners in a mutually assured death dance.

Would you rather have e-coli covered lettuce from Mexico that has been watered from a sewage pit?

Time to shift your investment portfolio to the East a bit.

The only foods i've noticed in mainstream supermarkets are mushrooms and garlic. I avoid buying food from China. They've made the news too many times for me with criminal food safety issues.

I'll happily point out that this only means that offenders are caught in China. It doesn't mean that there are no offenders here, just that we don't catch many of them.

Look at how many food inspectors are employed by the province and I'm surprised we catch anyone here at all.

What's the difference between Chinese, American and Mexican produce? Takes about the same time to get here depending on your transportation method. Do you believe that the latter two contain less pesticides?

I would much rather take my chances with north american food inspection. I know we've had listeria etc, but there is a world of difference between that kind of issue and some manager deciding to add melamine to baby formula.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8476080/Top-10-Chinese-Food-Scandals.html

In 2008 six babes were killed and 300,000 were left sickened after consuming infant formula contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. The scandal, which was hushed up for several months to avoid embarrassment during the Olympic Games, caused outrage in China and smashed public confidence in the government and its ability to regulate the food industry.

Read the label from all the foods you eat, I do. You would be surprised how much of it comes from China. I myself, will not buy anything from China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, or any muslim country. I try to buy Canada or USA. Don't forget to check your canned and frozen stuff, you would be surprised how much is from above. I mean, think about it, most of these places, are the most polluted places on the planet. I was listening to the radio the other day, and Chinese Canadians were calling, and they wont eat this crap. Sorry, to steal thread, but imho, no one should buy anything from a muslim country for anything.

Although some things from China are unavoidable, especially when they're labeled "Packed in Canada" when the ingredients are actually from China, you can still find many local goods. Buy meat and veg from local Ontario farmers when you can. The Farmer's Market at the St. Lawrence Market has some great local producers. I love this time of the year. You can also get good fresh, wild Atlantic or Pacific fish if you hunt around.

You might pay a bit more going to a place that supplies good local goods, but it just makes sense to me!

All my meat and veg. St. Lawrence Market. Don't buy a lot of prepackaged. I make it better anyway with not much more time.
If its going onto or into my body I check the label.
And I don't shop at dollar stores. There is a reason they are so cheap.....

In a can of apple juice which says product of Canada because it is produced here with apples from the Niagara region, also contains emulsifier, stabilizer, preservatives, artificial colours and other additives which are increasingly being made in China. The same phenomenon occurs with maple syrup, beer and wine produced domestically, the country of origin of any additives need not be disclosed. Yellow fever has it's privileges and maybe has given me immunity to this anti- China bullsh.t. Even Glatt kosher products cannot escape from China's influence. A supermarket which is China free would make for prohibitively expensive shopping.

Well. Drive along the highway in China sometime and tell me what you see. They have no concept of zoning.

Typical scenery by the roadside:

Apartment building
Pond
Light factory
Farm
Large chemical plant
Farm
Large industrial factory
Apartments
Gas station
Farm
Farm
Chemical storage
Etc.

There is no way the ground water around those farms is safe.

Now... That is way down my list of worries, I love the food in China, especially the really dodgy little stands where they cook over an open flame in a home made oven created from an old oil drum. Tastes incredible.

But I am under no illusions that it is really safe. I just prefer to enjoy my life and figure something else will get me first.

so?

First, I don't get this buy North American mentality. Agriculture is so 19th century. So, instead of, um, like evolving into the future, we continue to be farmers.

Second, geez, what are we, wimps? I'm sure if you cook and store food properly, you'll be fine.
