City Council has referred this matter for further study.

My main concern is that pretty young ladies will get drunk and start taking their clothes off. Just kidding!

This has been going on in many countries in Europe. I have been to Copenhagen a few times and it is very common and legal. Their biggest amusement park Tivoli is known for picknickers having schnapps with their lunch and it is rarely abused because it is their way of life. As opposed to Toronto the good, when bars closed at 11pm and everyone downed as many drinks as they could in the last hour and got pissed.

Over. Council has decided to kick it down the road for a year. The proposal would have allowed it to hapoen between 11am and 9pm.

Methinks this has to do with getting a better handle on the homeless issues caused by the Pandemic first.

Considering this is already allowed in almost every other major Canadian city, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, etc., what makes Torontonians so immature that they can't handle it?

It will take away business from bars for sure. It is less than half the price to drink your own cans of beer from LCBO or Beer Store than bars.
And Toronto is like the UK and most American cities. People get absolutely shitfaced when given the opportunity.

I think it could be managed- like a bottle of wine or 6 beers per person would be limit of legal possession.
And requirement to have proof of age at hand, if possessing alcohol or weed in a park.
And littering fines should be increased and enforced

Housing market is not going to get occupants out of downtown condos for quite a while, and so young families that will happen there will need somewhere to unwind other than in their concrete box in the sky.

As others have mentioned, many cities around the world allow the consumption of alcohol in parks. Some places in Europe, Germany for example, allow you to consume alcohol just about anywhere. When I've gone there, I never noticed problems because of it. Like here, bottles and cans have a deposit so there's always people around to pick them up which solves the litter problem. If you look at it this way, there's already laws about being drunk and disorderly. So what's the difference between going to a bar, having X number of drinks then going to a park and having X number of drinks in the park?

They've finally changed the rules for events like Taste of the Danforth. It used to be you'd have to enter a tent or cordoned off area in order to have a drink. So what you'd have is people pounding a few drinks very quickly before going out to walk around. It makes more sense to allow people to walk around with a beverage and not feel rushed to consume a few at a time.

A bridge in Germany where people gather to enjoy local wines every afternoon. And yes, they're served in glass. How civilized.

I agree it should happen. Best thing is to allow adults to be adults. The time limit would work to greatly reduce issues. A few bylaw officers in the larger parks will deter the assholes.

We don't need to have alcohol (or pot for that matter) everywhere and anywhere just because. First it was stadiums, then provincial parks, then it was movie theatres, now the drunks want parks. Enough already. How bout a break from drunkards for the people that don't drink or get stoned all the time. Just one.
