That is odd "one way door" because I think that would be a Fire Marshall bylaw issue. Personally I see something wrong with that, and I have notice Fire M change their minds quiet often. But maybe it is the building owner doing this illegal.
The one way doors are on all floors except the door on the main level.
Once you are in the stairwell can only exit on street level unless you live there and have a key.

Exactly. We don't want weirdos (or raccoons) coming to our floor through the stairwell.

Sorry to hear you got pulled up. Was it in Toronto?
No worries...it was Markham, right after an appt, for failing to stop at a stop sign...I think I may have rolled through it, my mind was elsewhere... A few other details that made it nerve-racking that I won't get into... In the end I got off with a warning, so that was nice...The lesson here is, always come to a complete stop lol

Yeah this is wrong.

Here is why IF CONDO.

If there is a FIRE and you run out of your unit with no "KEY" and the fire is also on the stairs that you are in, you are stuck there unless another Residents lets you in to a different floor.

Here is why if BUSINESS building.

How can the mgt property give a key to every person that works there?

FOR BOTH
So what if I am chased by a Wielding sumari swords man on the stairs? There is no way to run that many stairs if you are at 13 floor.

People who work there have these magnetic pass cards.
Yeah so do I at work for .XXX.. But once in a while I forget the card or the reader goes kaput. It took one week to fix 2 doors and we had to bang / knock hard to get in.
And if the power goes out.. which has happened to us 6 times in one year, you hope someone was close to the door to hear the knock.

That's where a cellphone comes in handy.

Jeez Massivo. From your post #35 in this thread the impression that I got is that the police stop was directly escort related.

Thanks for clearing that up...

I thought if there is a fire and the alarm is pulled, the one-way locks are released? Imagine the liability if people could not get to the bottom and forgot their key, or they could not get back to their floor? Same issue with an office building. Having people barbequed in the stairway would not be a good optic to say the least.

"Why are stairwell doors locked on one side?
Commercial building stairwell doors often are locked on the stair side to prevent unauthorized entry from the stairwells into tenant spaces. The term “stairwell reentry” refers to the code requirements which allow a building occupant to leave a stairwell during a fire emergency, and find another exit.

Right or wrong that is how some buildings are set up.
If you can’t run that many stairs then get your
ass in shape.
