We are our government. You, I and everyone else. Are you willing to support putting in place legislation, regulations and policies and also be willing to pay for them to provide sufficient and affordable housing?

My guess would be NO you would NOT and thus you and others like you are to blame for the lack thereof.

To reply to the second sentence of your above quoted post, I would like to buy up properties that surround your residence and short term rent them to a revolving cast of characters, be they loud and obnoxious morons, just released convicts, asymptomatic covid carriers etc and you would have no recourse to stop me. After all according to you I "should be able to rent to whomever I want."
We pay the government enough for these things but somehow any surplus turns into a deficit. It's not a lack of money that's the problem. It's how the money is being spent. When the worst that can happen to you is getting voted out after looting millions, there is no incentive to change bad behaviour.

The cottage industry is at risk as well. A guy I used to work with has a few cottages that are usually booked for the summer now. NOBODY has booked yet. You have to feel for Trailer Park operators too.Not knowing the future.

That's interesting. I suspect there will be a big jump to book when the lockdown is relaxed. I can't think of a better place to social distance and relax than with nature.

I don't get the hatred toward Airbnb. I've had regular tenants in the past...now that is a nightmare. They can do thousands of dollars damage, they can stay for long periods of time without paying rent...basically a landlord has most of the normal property rights taken away (talking Ontario). So I would love to be able to good long term tenants...but I don't believe they exist. I have a short term rental in my principal residence (no I am not in Toronto) and I use various platforms, including Airbnb. I've had mostly great guests...the worst I had was a working girl that threw a party...fortunately there was no permanent damage. A few that were annoying...but the vast majority were a lot better for me and for my neighborhood than the long term tenants that were there in the past.

I depend on this income...without it I could not afford my place. So for me, yes, I could have long term tenants in my place I suppose...but I would sell before I would do that. It is not worth it. And that is certainly one of the appeals of short term rentals from a homeowner point of view.
