He went for credit not the blame. A true leader gives others credit and accepts the blame for failures. This was his first test of character
He didn't throw anybody under the bus. They guy responsible apologized and took the blame himself almost immediately.

Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, quickly apologized for Monday's incident after the planes prompted workers and residents to evacuate buildings in New York and New Jersey. Watch Townsend slam Caldera »

"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," Caldera said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption."
Just a little different from Bush declaring, "Great job Brownie!" as the FEMA director was asking "When can I get out of here?" while in New Orleans following hurricane Katrina.

Stop the spinning

We have Obama in the White House not Bush. You can rehash crap but it would not change the fact that Obama failed his first real test as a leader. Having an underling step up and confess is piss poor leadership. As President he is responsible for all the government under him. And in the case the Millitary is under him. If you exonerate him you must do the same for Bush and Cheny for millitary actions.

If you think, with all the shit that was on his plate when he took office, that this was his "first test" then you are the one doing the spinning.

Giving "managers" the autonomy to make decisions, with the understanding that they alone will get the credit or answer to the criticism, is the best approach to leadership.

Regarding the pirate incident, he took credit where it was due. More correctly, it was given to him; I don't recall a "Mission Accomplished" banner. He alone gave the final "green light" to the SEALs and would have to live with that decision no matter the outcome. It was only a "no brainer" because it was a success. If it had failed, in any one of a multitude of possible ways, he would have been in the center of a shitstorm. He knew this when he made his final decision. He also heaped credit on the SEALs themselves, and everybody involved, for the success of the operation.
