I am getting tired of all these idiots telephoning [sometimes 2 or 3 times a day] to sell me air duct cleaning...

I have taken the matter up with the management of the Do Not Call List but they are both clueless and helpless. They can't do anything, they say, without knowing who called, when and their telephone number... yeah, like it shows on call display screens!!!

I thought a while back of making an appointment and letting them send the cleaners and then tell them to go fuck themselves, but I don't think I would be wise without police support in case things get nasty and no police force that I know is willing to "waste time and energy" on "such trivialities."

So I am starting a new campaign to fight them and ask everyone here to join me and spread the message.

BUY A WHISTLE or other very loud noise maker and, when they call, BLOW IT IN THEIR EAR!

If we get enough people doing it, the telemarketers will get the message.

Surprisingly, I am informed that these calls happen mostly in the GTA area phone exchanges and the rest of the country is fairly free of this nuisance.

So, get with the program and spread the word!!!! :eyebrows:

That's why I cancelled my land line. It didn't make sense for me to spend money on a home phone that I seldom use and only get air duct cleaning or survey calls when I am at home.

When they phone, say "hang on a minute, I'll let you talk to my (wife/husband)". Then after a minute or so, come back on the line and say "did my husband/wife not come on the line - I'll get him/her right away". Then check back again (if they are still on the line) in a couple minutes and go through the same procedure. Drives them crazy. Typically, they work on commission and time is money. Takes a bit of effort but the amusement is worthwhile.

I've gone so far as to make an appointment with them hoping they'd show up and then tell them to go fuck themselves but they never showed up. Keeping them on the phone is entertaining and really aggravating on their part as they are indeed on commission. Also when they call ask if they're confirming the appointment for tomorrow/Tuesday/weekend etc. That really throws them off. I just can't figure out the scam especially when I said I'd pay cash upon completion so they're not getting my credit card number. The fact that the calls are coming from India is also equally bizarre.

I just tell that that's great, let me get my calendar and then put them on hold.
Forever.

I got a call from a telemarketer at 12:30 AM. It scares the hell out of a guy to get a call at that time of night. You are sure some tragedy has happened. It was the type of call where the first part was a recording. I didn't think to wait until a human came on the line to give him a piece of my mind. The next time the same outfit called I listened to the recording and there was an option to push #8 to be taken off the call list. This actually worked!

Though it can be fun, part of me doesn't think it's right to screw with telemarketers. They are just desperate people working below minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. The question is how to best fuck with the people who hire them.

p.s. my condo cleans the dryer ducts occasionally. I was home one time and a crap-load of lint can build up in them. I doubt it is a major fire risk like they try to tell you but it likely slows down the drier.

Well, yes it is a fire risk. Where do you think that lint comes from, and if the vents are blocked, it's not leaving the dryer. Dryer elements are hot and the lint build up that can't escape because of a plugged vent can easily burn. Don't underestimate that risk.

Also, as tempting as the idea is to book with these telemarketers, no matter the service they are providing, and then telling them to go fuck themselves when they show up, do you really want them knowing where you live?

I also get these calls 5-10 times a week, every week for the last few years on both my home phones. I hate these people! I've done the whistle thing, but I don't know if the phone system attenuates the volume, but the guy didn't seem bothered.

They've gotten so sneaky that the incoming call has displayed the name/number of Cdn Tire, the Toronto library and several different local exchange numbers.

CRTC has had some luck shutting some of the firms down:

Offshore telemarketers sell ripoff duct cleaning, expert says:

Marketplace ran a special on this scam:

I tell then I am glad they called because I am unhappy with the service they provided when they came and cleaned my ducts a few weeks ago and I want to make a complaint to the supervisor. For some reason they always hang up on me!

I got tired of them so I send them to fake addresses on my street. They call really pissed off saying they can't find my address. I tell them to stop calling me and get me off their list then they ask me why I am wasting their time!

Umm really? They already have your phone number and likely your real address in their database. If not, it's possible that a reverse look-up (i.e. canada411) will get your real address and there are services that sell this database.

As mentioned in one of the videos I provided above, when people arranged for the duct cleaners to come to their house to give them sh*t for all the calls, there were later vandalism problems in several cases. Better to just hang up.

Robo Call Blocking

I get very few Robo Calls. My telephone service provider suggested I use nomorobo .
If I do get a Robo Call I enter it into their database and every subscriber is spared a robo call.
Similarly when other members make an entry all members are spared a robo.

The FCC rejected an industry attempt to ban the practice.

It is not a service for the unobservant On a few occasions I get calls with the caller id set to the number called.
If you cannot remember you own telephone number perhaps you should give nomorobo a pass.

FYI...

Not that it matters, but I thought you might want to know that since I started blowing it in their ears the number of calls has dramatically decreased... from, say, 9 or 10 per week to, maybe, 1 every 2 weeks...

I bet if more people did the same thing the calls would disappear altogether...
