My experience is that even with the same airline there is often a major difference between overseas flights and North American flights (including those between Canada and the U.S. ⇆).
Fly in the summer. That's pretty much true with any airline. FA's are hard to find long-term because it's kind of not that great a job. So the same lady that would work the counter at a diner is what you get for full-time, permanent FA's usually. But in the summer, all those extra flights mean extra staff is needed. Extra staff willing to work on a temporary basis while school is out. So in July a flight that would usually have a 30-something guy and two 40-year-old FA's is crewed by one experienced FA and 2 co-eds. There's a reason I take most of my vacation time in the winter. My only beef with AC is that they do not hire hot flight attendants.
I've been on other airlines where my jaw has been on the floor staring at the flight crew. It seems tah AC hires their mothers and brothers.
I think you're the first person I've ever met that has anything good to say about American. It is an oxymoron!
I avoid AC... usually fly AA whenever possible and Westjet
"They suck so much, when I screwed up they saved me over $600."Yes, I agree that Air Canada "service" for the most part sucks ass big time. They've fucked me around often... and I do a fair amount of business travel in my 30 years of adult life... However... Having attained the level of elite status, they DO relax they're service levels to some degree...
I recent had a scheduled business trip to Las Vegas for an industry trade show. My flight was booked months in advance, and I've been on this same trip literally dozens of times. My flight was always a later evening flight, say around 8:00 pm. With the time change and flight time, I usually ended up checking into my hotel around 11:30 pm. This time, I figured same deal, right? Wrong...
My travel agent booked me on the 8:30 flight. Having been on that trip so often, I just put my ticket confirmation in my travel portfolio and waited for the day of. Now... it just so happened that this flight was booked on Family day, so I figured I had a nice leisurely day... sleep in, nice breaky, lounge around a bit, pack my bags etc... I even booked a session with my favourite SP for later in the afternoon! So the day progressed pretty much as I had planned, and at about 12:30, I go to Air Canada's website to check in on their web site. Error message. Hmmm strange. I check my ticket confirmation again. It is then that I realize that unbeknownst to me at the time, the evening flight no longer exists, so my flight was booked for 8:30 AM not PM! I missed my flight by 4 hours! I quickly pack up my car, fire off a text to SexySpinner explaining that I hafta cancel, and dial the 1-800 number for Air Canada on my hands free... I'm on hold the entire time to the airport and finally Dave comes on. I explain the entire situation, and take complete responsibility for my own fuck up, and plead with the guy to somehow get me to Vegas today. He puts me on hold... I'm actually WAITING in the airport parking lot at this point! He finally comes back on with a solution. He can get me on the 4:00 pm to Calgary and then the 7:45 from Calgary to Vegas, landing at about 9:00. Perfect! Then he says it'll cost $638! $438 difference in cost, plus $200 flight change fee.
Then I switch hats from idiot traveler to negotiator. "Dave", I say, "you gotta help my out brother..." I travel Air Canada all the time, (give him my AP #), check my travel history, blah, blah, blah... It took me an additional 10 minutes but I talk him out of changing me the extra $638.
Yes, Air Canada sucks... but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
I remember when airlines used to give you that for free. Playing cards too! Now you have to buy them along with pillows and blankets! at least for domestic flightsAir Canada does have the best pens though. Can't believe how smooth they are.....
Well, I can tell you what caused that: customer focus on low-cost.I remember when airlines used to give you that for free. Playing cards too! Now you have to buy them along with pillows and blankets! at least for domestic flights
That's union flight attendants for you. The older ones have seniority and won't retire. I flew AC many years ago to London, never again. I have flown BA ever since and I have never had a problem with booking or lost luggage etc...My only beef with AC is that they do not hire hot flight attendants.
I've been on other airlines where my jaw has been on the floor staring at the flight crew. It seems tah AC hires their mothers and brothers.
My vote for hottest flight attendants goes to Singapore.http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards_2012/namerica.htm
Air Canada was voted "The Best International Airlines in North America" in 2011 and 2012. So they must be doing something right, at least by North American standards.
I have been using Air Canada for a very long time and have not had cause to complain. I fly economy when traveling to Europe and book an isle seat close to the end of the plane. The next seat to mine is almost always empty. There is a power socket to watch movies on my lap top without interference. I fly business on long haul to Asia, enjoying the newer lounge type seats with the zanny controls.
True, the attendants are not the best looking but older attendants have to make a living, too. They do not practice age discrimination like some other airlines that do not hire female attendants older than 30.
The best looking flight attendants are on Asiana Airlines. Those Korean babes look like they have been sculpted.
Yes, Bluelaser- I did fuck up. I fully admit that, (it was actually my first comment to Dave: "I'm and idiot...") and was prepared to pay some if not all the charges levied. I didn't expect them to waive the entire fee, but at that point, the "negotiator" in me took over... (I negotiate just about everything in life EXCEPT my dates with SP's, LoL), and yes, in THIS particular case, the AC associate that I spoke to, DID go above and beyond. That is exactly why I put that last statement in my post about a broken watch being right twice a day."They suck so much, when I screwed up they saved me over $600."
I won't say which airline I fly for, which is why you don't see me giving an opinion in this thread because no matter which side I take it will at least likely reveal if I fly for AC or not, but let's face it, you goofed, big time. And any airline would've been well within their right to charge you the difference. Waiving the change fee is nice, but you just described costumer service above and beyond what any normal, sane person should expect from any company IMO.
