I feel that I am becoming a more careful and considerate driver the older I get. Maybe it partly is because I refuse to be in a hurry, and became tired of getting speeding tickets.

It may be that older drivers cause accidents, because other drivers become impatient with their over-careful driving, but you really cannot blame them for that.

Because most of us drive just fine...when they get charged with impaired or careless they get their licensed suspended, that takes care of a lot of the shitty drivers.
IMO the "just fine" attitude is a dangerous one and not just regarding driving. Professional drivers make serious mistakes all the time. Just because you haven't been impaired, been in an accident, or have been careless does not mean that you cannot improve your driving. We all develop bad driving habits. Some of these might not be technically wrong or illegal, they could contribute to close calls or accidents down the road.

I don't think having a mandatory driving test say every 5 or 10 years is going to improve everyones driving habits...there is enough checks in place to weed out the dangerous drivers.

As I said earlier, making driver training mandatory would impractical. For one, we'd need to have enough driving examiners. The insurance industry could incentivize people to take continuous training though. I think it's better to address bad driving habits before they become aggressive let alone dangerous. If you are a regularly aggressive or dangerous driver then you're more likely to cause an accident, which would be too late.

There's a lot of shirty drivers out there, not just geezers.

I'd wager that young drivers crack up a lot more than old drivers.

Absolutely...the young drivers are the ones with the impaired and careless charges, they chose to drive like idiots, they can drive safely if they want too.

The geezers are more of a problem with motor skills...

Well, I can. Driving 70 km/hr on a highway is as dangerous as going 140km. Roads are safer when all drivers behave in a similar predictable way.

Not if the posted limit is 60 km/hrs. I refuse to get a speeding ticket just because somebody behind me is impatient and there is no place for me to ease over for him to pass.

The fact is that some other drivers get pissed if you only go 15 km over the posted limit. Maybe they have reasons to be in a hurry, so I always try to ease over to let them pass.

It seems to me that Ontario's program is quite reasonable:

Ontario's senior driver programs aim to keep seniors driving for as long as they can safely do so.

Once drivers reach 80 years of age, every two years they must:

  • Take a vision test
  • Undergo a driver record review
  • Participate in a 45-minute Group Education Session (GES)
  • During the GES, complete two, brief, non-computerized in-class screening assignments
  • If necessary, take a road test
This entire renewal process will take a total of about 90 minutes.

Please note that this is a licence renewal program. Existing and valid licenses will be not revoked, but all requirements need to be met before your licence is renewed.

Once you've completed the group session and screening components you may be asked to take a road test or submit medical information from your doctor.
I agree 100%

A persons reaction time etc. at 40 is NOT the same at 80. My father in law failed the written test 5 times road test 3 times. The last time the test person called me over and said ''he really shouldn't be driving'' He was 79.

Every driver should take a the DDC 6 Defensive Driving Course.
It is everything you should have known when you got your DL.
However you were too busy keeping the car between the white lines.
I have been a DDC 6 Instructor. I live in a small town and driving is so sedate I critque all the other drivers.

BTW DDC 6 works!!!

Hopefully with my face in a pussy
My understanding is that even with autonomous vehicles, you still will need to have a license.
I would hope so, because if the guidance system breaks down and you have to drive it manually, you'd better know how. Perhaps there would be two grades; one license that allows you to take over manually by entering a password, and one that would simply guide the vehicle to the side of the road and stay there until help arrives.
