quote from red ram: "or the fact that they do not have a bunch of beer swilling.....hot dog eating.....NASCAR ,,,NFL,,,WWF watching slobs building those autos????"

Jesus man, that's pretty harsh, and not altogether true. I grew up in Detroit...most of my family work for the big 3. Say what you want about American cars vs. foreign cars, but show a little respect. For all the things that get said on this board, and I contribute a fair share of the jabs, I'm surprised at how much you just offended me. Not cool, man...

Sorry Dave, the RX-8 is rear-wheel drive AND significantly slower than the WRX. Mazda's rotary engine produces good high-end HP, but acceleration suffers... when matched to the 6-spd manual transmission (I won't even address automatic, since that's not really driving IMHO):

247@ 8500 (HP)
159 @ 5500 (Torque)

0-60 is projected in the mid 7s, compared to the mid 5s for the Subaru... actually, not even close.

The TSX? OMG. That's like a sporty-sedan, not a sports car. Front-wheel drive and underpowered for this discussion. Not a fair fight.

Now, the EVO is very interesting... better than the base WRX. Which is why Subaru is releasing the WRX STi (a super-tuned beast)... To be honest, I would experience car-nirvana with either the Evo or the WRX.

In fact, the only car that I think I would enjoy driving around town more than either one of those (at any price) is a BMW M3.

Again, to each their own.

my first car was a 1973 mercedes 300d bought it for my 16th... ran it til it fell apart when I was 25. DAMN that was a well built machine.

VolksWagon Diesel jettas have been great machines too in my experience.

VolksWagon Beetles [the real one] are incredibly simple and sturdy and very hackable.

note: check the unibody structures for rust/decay. its embarassing to drop a floor on the highway. [at which point things get a little complex]

The VW built in germany are good quality i know those who have the german built ones that run great, I also have a friend that has the mexican built ones and they simply suck. So Mexican = bad, german = good and as always: japanese= best, american = very bad.

To date most of my firneds own japanse cars and i have never heard a complaint form them. Of the few friends who own domestics and VW, all i hear are complaints. I can not imagine how some of my friends can drive around with the fear that they might not get home cuz their car may break down.

Before I could never understand how people would waste money on cars with over 150k on them, but after buying a used honda with high kilometers, I would not hesitate to pick up another good value used japanse car even if it had crazy high mileage.

Oh and as for EVO vs STI, i would choose the evo cuz it is new and no one has it, but i will regret it once I get smoked by the STI.

a friend of mines 1.8t has been a lemon..

.. and needed the turbo repaired 3 times in a matter of several monthes. VW wasn't all that helpful either. That'll teach him to slag north American cars, his import is a lemon!

rented a mitsubishi in the states a few weeks back. Fit and finish was good. A bit under powered for my liking.

2001 1.8t

I have a 2001 1.8t jetta with sports suspension and 17' rims. it is all stock. and I have had no problems whatsoever. in fact, when my lease is up, i might just get the same car.
I would like to get an audi a4 or bmw, but imho the vw is a cheaper alternative, with the same design and manufacturing.
another car I would seriously consider is acura.

Dave, you said:

"Besides, I'd choose the EVO over the the STi simply because its a Mitsubishi and the other is a Subaru .... "

So I guess you don't mind getting your ass kicked in a street race then.

Are you this label-centric when it comes to other things, too? Clothes, for example?

Who cares who makes what if one car is simply *better* than the other?

It's as if your Grade 3 home-room teacher was a 250lb Japanese woman named Subaru... who habitually beat you with the chalk-brush.

You seem scarred.

What? VWs are German and are from the same house as Porsche and Audi, how can they be shitty cars?

Although my family nor myself has ever owned a VW, I think my dad secretly likes them. And as for myself, I like the Jettas and Golfs. 1.8 T or VR6 preferred of course ... hehe
I had a Corrado and a GTI, also drove my dadès audi, nothing but nightmares and electrical problems

that's true quite a few manufacturers have plants in canada. Infact the 2 GM plants in oshawa have recieved awards for quality over the last 2 or 3 years. The models include the Impala, Monte Carlo, Regal and I think the Grand Prix as well.

Generally speaking North american car quality has actually improved over the last 5 years.

Well yeah man ... in no way am I a snob who only think expensive labels are good. But yet, sometimes the label makes all the difference.

Take cameras for example, everyone knows Nikon is the one for SLRs and for high end stuff, you get a Leica ...

Same with electronics and speakers ...

Yeah, sometimes its just marketing and how you present the brand name, but often enough ... if the brand produces high quality products, it markets itself ...

Why do I dislike Mazdas and Subarus? It's because these companie suck compared to other Japanese companies.

When you put Mitsubishi and Fuji Industries head to head ... Mitsubishi would win by a mile ...

It takes a long time to make your brand into a brand name. Honda and Toyota are good examples.

And to relate to this board, SPs don't just become "legends" over night. You have so-so SPs and you got brand name SPs as well as agencies too. Why do you think people here are so loyal to Allison's or Select or VIP? I mean all the agencies market themselves here on TERB the same way ... yet, why are Allison's, Select and VIP considered the "better" ones? It all boils down to reputation and how you built that reputation and maintain your status as a "better" one ...

This is also true for cars as well as other products.

And when it comes to clothes, even though I ain't a big fan of fashion, I consider Guess and Hilfiger to be crappy simply becaue I pesonally don't find them appealing or unique. I rather get a Nautica suit over a Hilfiger suit when the two brands are about the same in terms of pricing ...

Sorry in that case I will update my list

German=good, mexican=bad, Japanese=bad, american=won't start.

American cars look cool? LMAO !!! hahahahhahahaha

That's the funniest thing I have heard or read all week ... and I have heard and read many funny things already and its only wednesday today ... hehehe

Have you seen the new Grand Prix? Looks way too "scientific" and "robotic" ...

But, the Cadillac CTS looks cool though ... so props to Cadillac's new styling direction ...

I guess subdave won't like the new BMW that has a front grill that has been mistaken for the pontiac grand prix.

it is all individual choice but the CTS is butt ugly IMHO. They are trying really hard but still missing the mark.

Which one? The new 5-series that is being feature in BMW Magazine?

I don't really know yet ... somtimes they look really nice or shitty in pics but look the opposite in real life.

If your talk about the new 7 series ... they fucking kick ass. My dad loves the new 7 ...

I think it is the 5 series. I read a lot of reader mail on it in an auto mag. complaining that if BMW owners wanted a car that looked like a pontiac they would buy a pontiac. look for the grill to be modified in the near future.
