I’ve torn my ACL and I have to undergo reconstructive surgery. I’m currently trying to find an Off-the-Shelf ACL knee brace. I’m going with an OTS rather than a custom one mainly because I have no insurance and right now I can’t afford $1500 for one. OTS models are still expensive ($750 - $900) but I need to get one. What I’ve found out so far is that places tend to favor one kind of brace more than the others. When I enquire about popular brands, such as Donjoy and Innovation, they are tossed to the side and I’m only told about the product they carry. If it were all the same brand than I’d understand but they all seem to differ. I can’t seem to find a place that will let me try different brands on and let me make the decision to choose. All they seem to do is tell me which one I have to spend my money on. Which leaves me to believe that they are just partners with the manufacture in some way. Maybe, I’m being stingy but I feel that if I’m going to be spending that kind of money on something I have to use all the time, then I should have a say in which one suits me best. Can anyone recommend a brace? Are there certain braces I should stay away from? So far my limited choices are Omni Rage, Generation II Paradigm, and Townsend Rebel Pro.

Orthopedic Appliance Research - they'll custom fit and make a brace to your needs.

what kind of prices are they talking?

I hear ya Nashua.I've had many knee surgeries on my right knee.thank god I had insurance because my brace cost me $1800.It's a huge business and I think highly overpriced...it's a shame.

I got my brace at the Davisville Sports clinic as my surgeron works out of there. (Dr.Olgivie-Harris).I did'nt bother shopping around because I did have insurance.

best of luck, and take it easy...blowing your ACL is not good ,be sure to do your re hab religiously. :)

Can't remember exactly...Gerrard and Woodbine perhaps...definately south of Riverdale and a bit NW of the Beaches...they should be in the phone book

where are they located?
nevermind I found it. I actually hear about this place from someone else. My understanding is that they only do custom braces and deal with Innovation products.

Thanks for the help but I'm trying to avoid custom brace prices. I know for sure that you can't find a custom brace for under $1400.

You might be right and $$ for custom braces have increased over the years, mine is certainly old now but it works well.

I also sustained a knee injury, and was in physiotherapy. My physiotherapist recommended a great brace, which was not all that expensive (in the grand scheme of things) so I would recommend that you talk to a physiotherapist.

Shoppers drug mart has this other division where they sell medical devices such as braces etc. You can find a neoprene one with aluminum braces for under $200.00

I do have a spare one. If you want it, you can have it as I picked it up while waiting for my donjoy one.
I have a brace like that already but thanks for the offer. Where can I find a place to take a look at Donjoy's? Can I find them at Shoppers? All the research that I've been doing says that they are one of the best but out of all the places that I've called so far no one seems to have them. Is the one you're getting custom or OTS?
