Acer or Compaq laptop?

I was in Best Buy looking for an inexpensive laptop. They have good deals on both Acer and Compaq. Which brand is preferable?

Believe they do have some type of business relationship.
Acer is an up and coming outfit, it's been growing. There are rumors out that Acer is thinking of buying Gateway.
Based on that they're both probably OK.

HP merged with Compaq (HP being the buyer) in 2002.

bought an HP lately and I am really satisfied with it. Problem with Acer is that the cheapest ones look fragile and... cheap!

I've heard good reviews of the new IBM brand called... i can't remember... but it seems more expensive than HP.

It's Lenovo and it is a Chinese company that purchased IBM's hardware division about three years ago.

Lenovo has been getting high marks.
Here in NY Lenovo is not more expensive than HP and usually Lenovo has better specs than a comparable HP laptop.
If I got a laptop in would be a Lenovo.

yeah if they have just a half of the old IBM thinkpad then it is worthy...

I bought an Acer about 2 years ago at Radio Shack and it's served me well. I've had no problems at all and, even if I did, I bought a two-year extended warranty so it's still covered.

I would strongly recommend making sure you have at least a 3-year warranty as laptops are infamous for self-destructing within a couple years of purchase (and the basic warranty usually expires after 1 year). An extended warranty is usually several hundred bucks, so factor that into the purchase price.

Also be aware that you can sometimes buy a cheaper extended warranty directly from the manufacturer. I saved about $100 on mine by going with the Acer extended warranty over the Radio Shack extended warranty.

I am a dealer and both are good. I would suggest the Acer because of there extended warranty. Go to an independent and buy the acer 3Year warranty you should be able to get it for $ 125 or $ 250 for the Total protection which covers accidental damage. It gets dropped etc. If you have a problem finding it I am a dealer and can do it online for $ 119 or $219. DONT buy a Futureshop or store extended warranty. they are shit and very slow at getting your unit fixed. Good Luck.

I heard Acer support and service sucks compared with HP/Compaq. I would tend to go with HP/Compaq as they dump a ton of money into research whereas Acer and Dell compete more on price.

Myself I have a LG laptop with the E7400 chip (not inexpensive).
