Oops, when I said 1/2 swing, I meant taking the club back halfway in your backswing and a nice follow thru to finish. Uhmmm, you're saying that the length from the wrist line to the ground is the same for a 7 foot person as it is for someone that is 5 feet tall? If that was the case women's clubs wouldn't be 1/2" to 1" shorter in overall length and guys like Ernie Els, Michael Jordan etc. wouldn't be playing clubs up to an inch longer and 2-3 degrees upright lie angle. I do agree that club fitting isn't critical at the start as an instructor would eventually adjust your stance etc and you might end up more upright or more bent over.

Unless the person starting golf is athlethically gifted (don't we all wish?), taking them on a full fledged par 72 course is a sure way to make them loose any sort of confidence. I'm not saying that they should stick ONLY to execuitive par3 courses, I'm just saying that they need to start off easily first and gain some confidence and gauge their level of play. Most women I've played with (doesn't that sound dirty now?) start using their woods on holes 140yrds and out and sometimes even less. Again, gauge your level and play accordingly.

Lots of great advice here by Bud Plug, Sukdeep etc. It only takes one great shot throughout an entire round of duffs, wiffs and shanks to bring you back for more.

Not to get sidetracked, but, yes, it's true. Certainly there is some variation between people, but not much. Ladies clubs have traditionally been shorter due to weight considerations. Most golfers who need a different length of shaft do so because of their torso angle (more or less bent over relative to the ground) rather than their height. Michael Jordon's clubs are likely longer because, as you mention, he plays the ball closer to his feet and stands more upright than average (thus, the upright lie).

SSS will not likely have to worry about such fine points for a while.

3. Nice clubs are not necessarily that much more expensive. You can get'em on sale. For example, the Callaway GES set is going for $250 (original MSRP was $500). The Taylor Made Miscela can be bought is half-sets.
I would highly recommend the Callaway Game Enjoyment System (GES). They are a great deal at Golf Town ($249, 7 clubs including bag) and they have been the perfect set for several female golfers I know who just picked up the game. If you are just getting started it takes a lot of the guess work out of club selection and they are very playable from any lie.

I would recommend taking some lesssons from a qualified professional and remember, golf is a simple game that is easily complicated.
