Dougie...my girlfriend told me on Monday about his death.....i was somewhat familiar with their music....kinda like the Delphonics &The Stylistics....but i never got into their music for some reason....but quite awhile back you posted a song by them...i think it as you.. anyway...i became a fan...RIP WalterI just found out that Walter Scott, one of the founding members of the R&B group The Whispers, passed away on June 26 at the age of 81.Walter, along with his twin brother Wallace "Scotty", were the co-lead singers. The Whispers are one of my favorite groups of all time. An extensive discography that goes back to the 1960's and culminates with their final studio LP in 2009. Walter now joins his fellow bandmates Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson and Gordy Harmon in heaven.
The Whispers became super popular after they signed with SOLAR in 1978. They eventually teamed up with in house producer Leon Sylvers III and magic was made. In 1979 they scored their first #1 hit with "And the Beat Goes On". They would have to wait another 8 years to achieve their 2nd #1 hit with "Rock Steady" which was produced by Babyface and L.A. Reid. In all they achieved 13 top 10 R&B charted singles, 2 platinum selling albums and 3 gold selling albums.
Their 1st top 10 hit "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong" (1970)
Their 1st top 10 song on SOLAR "(Lets Go) All the Way" (1978)
My personal favorite track from them "Keep On Lovin' Me" (1983)
Their last top 10 song "Is it Good to You" (1990)
Etta started out and was presented as a Pop singer.....that was the case until the mid to late 60,s when Record producer from The Fame studios and The Cadet label Rick Hall turned her into a Southern Soul singer...what a fuckin, transformation....this is her impeccable rendition of a C&W classic.....making it a Soul song with a "churchy" organ and background singers....imho a music classicMy favorite Etta tune of all time - just has the upbeat vibe - love it.
And much more emphasis on the 2 and 4 snare backbeats In the Midnight Hour...Sped up and slightly higher tone, but same rhythm as
One of my "Mt Rushmore" singers......more powerful than a locomotive lol
My favAfter "At Last", my fave Etta James song:
Saw her at the Club Bluenote in Toronto years ago. Sat very close to the stage. She began singing wearing a light coloured dress, but by the time she finished it was dark purple, LOL. She was fantastic and I agree that her best song was At LastAfter "At Last", my fave Etta James song:
