like a lot of her soul tunes....starts slow and ends with Etta James Power
Her best song ever,. AT LAST. Saw her years ago at The Club Bluenote, she was a very big girl then, started her set wearing a lavender coloured dress, finished wearing a dark purple dress. She was fantastic.

Yes Watley won best new artist Grammy award for her 1987 platinum selling debut solo album. Of course she wasn't new to the music scene having spent a number of years in the r&b group Shalamar before embarking on a solo career.

Its taken me a while to come to this realization but Superfly has to go down as the best movie soundtrack in history. The songs all fit to tell a story, its truly remarkable. Everyone knows 'Superfly' 'Pusherman' and 'Freddie's Dead' but here's another gem from that album.

Definitely my favorite song from the Space Jam soundtrack and might very well be my favorite D'Angelo song. Early neo soul sounds

Maxwell was one of the earlier neo soul artists along with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. I was lucky enough to see him in concert at Massey Hall a few years ago and it was worth every penny and more. His debut album Urban Hang Suite is simply majestic. And this is my favorite jam from it.

Gotta be one of the funkiest jams ever laid on wax. The Blackbyrds - Rock Creek Park (1975)

Great sample of this by early hip hop group UTFO

Gotta do a shout out for the legends UTFO (Untouchable Force Organization). They released four studio albums in the 80's and discovered one of the first female rappers Roxanne Shante, who hosts a show on LL Cool J's Rock The Bells radio. Here's a few of their better known songs

Roxanne, Roxanne

Leader of the Pack

Split Personality (my personal favorite)

RIP to the Educated Rapper

My personal favorite movie soundtrack is Juice (1992). The film starred Omar Epps, Tupac Shakur & Jermaine Hopkins. It was alright but the soundtrack was filled with bangers 🔥
Like these

Don't Be Afraid - Aaron Hall

Is it Good to You - Teddy Riley feat. Tammy Lucas

Uptown Anthem - Naughty By Nature

Another great soundtrack, and a much better movie than Juice, is Boyz N The Hood. Starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Laurence Fishburne and O'Shea Jackson (aka Ice Cube).

How To Survive in South Central - Ice Cube

Me and You - Tony! Toni! Tone!

Just Ask Me To - Tevin Campbell feat. Chubb Rock

Just found this gem recently. Interesting back story. This group formed while serving time in prison and caught the eye of a Motown record producer while performing in the prison talent show. This was their biggest hit, it reached #45 on the R&B charts in 1973
