I once heard that most people's favourite music is what they were listening to between the ages of 14 to 28 or so, "the memory years". Break up, make up, etc.
So for me it's the early 1960's through the late 1970's.
When I'm in my car I have my iPod or a USB stick connected with songs from my iTunes playlists playing all the time.
The only time I'm exposed to new music is when I see a new band on SNL, or when my children are in my car as I let them control the radio, or play their own stuff from their phones on the car's Bluetooth connection.
Otherwise I'm almost totally oblivious to new music. In fact, as much as I love blues, soul, funk, 60's girl groups, and even Disco, today's R&B feels over-processed, over-produced, and too "polished".
Part of being an old fogey I guess...
I get it and I fall into the same trap. That said, I'm in my mid 30s hanging with you fellas enjoying the tunes from the 60s but also deep in the early 00s and trying to get more into the 2020s lol.
Now more than ever it's easy to have new songs delivered to you - the algorithms do a decent job with this. I use Spotify for this very purpose - look up a song you love then swipe left. When you swipe the algorithm will suggest and play a song in the similar vein. The longer you listen to that new song, the more songs like that one it'll continue to serve. It's a good way to discover new stuff.
Alternatively I dig into "Best of" albums of certain groups. If I'm not vibing with their best stuff, they likely aren't for me. If I am, then I'll go deeper into each artist catalogue.
