I once heard that most people's favourite music is what they were listening to between the ages of 14 to 28 or so, "the memory years". Break up, make up, etc.

So for me it's the early 1960's through the late 1970's.

When I'm in my car I have my iPod or a USB stick connected with songs from my iTunes playlists playing all the time.

The only time I'm exposed to new music is when I see a new band on SNL, or when my children are in my car as I let them control the radio, or play their own stuff from their phones on the car's Bluetooth connection.

Otherwise I'm almost totally oblivious to new music. In fact, as much as I love blues, soul, funk, 60's girl groups, and even Disco, today's R&B feels over-processed, over-produced, and too "polished".

Part of being an old fogey I guess...

I get it and I fall into the same trap. That said, I'm in my mid 30s hanging with you fellas enjoying the tunes from the 60s but also deep in the early 00s and trying to get more into the 2020s lol.

Now more than ever it's easy to have new songs delivered to you - the algorithms do a decent job with this. I use Spotify for this very purpose - look up a song you love then swipe left. When you swipe the algorithm will suggest and play a song in the similar vein. The longer you listen to that new song, the more songs like that one it'll continue to serve. It's a good way to discover new stuff.

Alternatively I dig into "Best of" albums of certain groups. If I'm not vibing with their best stuff, they likely aren't for me. If I am, then I'll go deeper into each artist catalogue.

Thanks for the tip.

There is some new music I have found and enjoyed over the past 20 years, such as by The National, The Crystal Stilts, Palmyra Delran, and most recently "Chaise Longue" by Wet leg.

I also enjoy neo-soul and funk put out in the 90's up to today by labels such as Dap-Tone with Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and the late Sharon Jones.

However I do believe that not getting into "new", or not wanting to even put forth the effort to find "new", especially when it comes to music, is a natural development as we age, especially past 50 or 60.

As an extreme example, when I was a kid I used to love comic books and newspaper comic strips. I actually would feel anxiety at that time over the possibility that one day I wouldn't enjoy them. Well, I have to say that today I do not read comic books or newspaper comic strips any more, and am not interested in movies derived from them such as Spider man, or other Marvel characters. On the other hand I still very much enjoy sophisticated cartoons such as those published in The New Yorker magazine.

La vie!

Nor am I - I purposely try to listen to new stuff as hard as it is sometimes lol.
Occasionally there's some good newer stuff but it pales in comparison to the Golden Age.

I don't think we've ever posted anything from Cissy Houston before. Cissy of course is Whitney's mama and Dionne Warwick's auntie. Still kicking at 90 years old.
What a fantastic singer. She's done a lot of backup vocals for artists ranging from Van Morrison to Donny Hathaway to David Bowie to Luther Vandross. A trained gospel singer she has led the Youth Choir at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

One of Eddie Kendricks' biggest solo hits. #2 on the Hot 100 and a #1 R&B charter.
"Boogie Down" (1973)
