A system monitoring utility

If you're willing to face a bit of a learning curve, here's a good system monitoring utility:

Pick up "PC Utilities" magazine at Chapters. It's from the UK and is kinda pricey but contains a CD with scads of freeware and limited trial programs. Many of them have been noted here.

Winston i just saw this thread and i was going to post the same thing :p

Buy software and support your local developers.

PS... viruses, scripts??? Oh right windows........ I just had two orders from companies having me replace their Windows NT and XP machines with Mac networks. It was cheaper and would take less time to retrain their staff and and replace the network and all their services then it was to fix the Windows network. LOL
the funny things was the consulting firm they used does not support the Mac but could not argue against their own findings. LMAO

I found this little program called sexplorer which is very good. It is a browser but only in one file with no installation. It is easy to carry it around, if you work on different computers.
It has a hide feature, so you can make it look like a notepad with one click. It also has function for destroying all the history, cache and cookies so there will be no trace. It is also free. you can downloaded here:

You can also read more about at:

What is the best file sharing program? I used to use Kazaa but uninstalled it last year. I tried going to the Kazaa lite site but apparently there is a membership now? What is the most widely used program these days?

Another useful tip to compliment your AV and Firewall programs:

Create a phony email address for the 1st three and last 3 entries in your Address book e.g.
AAAAAAA@aaa.com
BBBBBBB@bbb.com
CCCCCC@ccc.com
and
XXXXXXX@xxx.com
YYYYYYY#yyy.com
ZZZZZZZ@zzz.com

Now, if a new virus or worm gets into your pc between AV updates, and tries to replicate itself to all your contacts, it will likely get snared at the start and you will get returned mail in your inbox as 'undeliverable mail'........likewise if it starts at the end of your list and works backwards.
At the very least, you will smell a rat and realize that there is some monkey business going on, and you can immediately run a scan before any damage is done!

What kind of parasites secret_touch? what symptoms are u experiencing? the AdAware program is great for removing all kinds of spyware etc.......but if it is a worm you need to run a scan to identify it, then go to your AV site to download thr free software to remove it. Can you explain your problem further?

You're welcome secret_touch! They should be able to fix the problem for him.........but there are scans one can get from the 'net for free and the 'fix' can be downloaded also for free from the AV site.....I suggest you review the freebies and suggestions listed by others earlier in this thread.....but most important, tell your brother to update his AV every weekend and if he is surfing a lot he should run AdAware once a week as well.....it is also a free download.

I note your comments Snooker90, but I have been using Mailwasher for 9 months now and my experience has been very positive! yes, its true that the Spam gets bounced back to sender, but as undelivered mail, leading the sender to believe that your address is invalid. .....over this period my spam has reduced! Mailwasher ALSO marks it as spam so that any subsequent spam from that address is 'blacklisted' and marked for bounce back and deletion. The BIG advantage is that only genuine mail gets downloaded to your pc mail inbox!
I also use the free AdAware program to delete spyware from my pc every week. a MAJOR source of all the Spam!

Another Virus Alert - Sober.D worm

Virus writers are reported to be again attempting to cause Internet chaos by spreading damaging code through the above worm, according to UK sources. It travels by email and claims to offer a cure for the recent MyDoom worm in an attachment......

Opening the attachment allows Sober.D to access any email addresses on your pc and send copies of itself to them!

The worm does not damage or delete files, but it will send infected emails from your pc.

Panda Software has a FREE Scanning Tool.....you will find it in the bottom left hand corner of the web page at;-

www.pandasoftware.com

Another good reason to keep your AV up-to-date and to follow the good advice of other Terbites in this thread! Also don't open email attachments without scanning them first.
If you are going to run an EXTERNAL scan of your system, disable your own AV to avoid conflicts, then reboot on completion.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mozilla:

www.mozilla.org

Mozilla is a package that includes a web browser and email client with a lot of built-in features that people are downloading programs for, such as Spam filtering, pop-up blocking, and easy control of cookies and cached pages. The biggest plus is that it doesn't have all the security flaws that IE and Outlook have - all those email viruses that keep destroying people's computers usually only work through Outlook.

get a good firewall, sysgate pro there is a free version but the advanced rules only allow 20 rules or zone alarm. Sysgate Pro allows unlimited rules for blocking IP's.

as well get peer guardian for blocking bad IP's and export the IP's to sysgate pro. check out the meth labs forums.

I tried Norton firewall and it used up all my CPU power. Sysgate
