Jury unable to reach verdict, asks judge for advice
July 10, 2007
CHICAGO - The jury in the Conrad Black's fraud trial appears deadlocked and has told the judge in the case they haven't been able to reach a unanimous verdict on all the counts before them.
In a note sent to judge Amy St. Eve, the jury says they had discussed and deliberated on all the evidence and still couldn't reach a unanimous verdict on one or more counts.
They asked the judge to advise them on what to do.
Jurors are in the ninth day of deliberations in the trial of Black and three other former Hollinger International executives on charges of fraud and racketeering.
Prosecutors are seeking the forfeiture of as much as US$92 million if the men are convicted and say the money is the proceeds of crime. The defendants can decide whether they want the judge to set the final amount - as is most often the case - or leave it in the hands of the jury.
