Cancer is such a diverse thing in terms of causes and mechanisms. Some strategies work for certain types of tumours but not others. The problem is cancer is ,ore like a symptom, not the disease. It is essentially a failure of a cell's suicide mechanism but the differing type of failure and causes means an overall panacea is extremely unlikely.
As for the effectiveness of donations, research has made many forms of cancer easily survivable as long as it hasn't metastasised.
