In Ontario if you make $250,000 per year of taxable income you will be paying an average tax rate of 41% and a marginal tax rate of 52.5%.
In Ontario if you make $500,000 per year of taxable income you will be paying an average tax rate of 47% and a marginal tax rate of 53.5%.

How much higher do you want to go. Even at the height of the Bob Rae years the highest marginal tax rate in Ontario was 53.2%, although that kicked in at much lower levels of income.

Raising tax rates eventually raises less money, so it becomes totally counter-productive. It eventually hurts the economy enough that total tax intake gets reduced.

Plus the good 'ole underground economy springs to life.

Personally I'd think upwards of 75% on the marginal rate. But I'd only push that on the conditional government is responsible with our tax dollars (they've proven not to be) and other forms of taxation are reduced.

I think there are only two of us with $500MM boats. Me and some guy who won the Superball lottery. Here's a pic of my boat below.

Personally, I think lottery winnings should be taxed 100%. I think they are tax-free now.

Why do you think the very rich do not give themselves a salary?

It's not about tax rate. It's about all the manipulation very rich do for paying any tax at all.

Very true! Now let's stop just talking about 'the very rich'. Everyone from the rich to the middle to the less than the middle, all use what ever they can to reduce their taxes. There are medical deductions ..... but not just $ for $, some strange formula is used. There are charitable deductions, but again not $ for $ and where is it deducted from .... etc. etc.

What would be the fairest would be to remove almost all the possible deductions save and except for charity donations. So if you are in a 30% tax bracket, you simply pay 30% of your income as tax. The people that benefit from our convoluted tax system the most are those high earning individuals and not so much the middle and definitely not the less than middle. Up to a basic living income, there should be no tax paid at all.

Basically, if one pays $1 Million in taxes, chances are they have $1 million left over for themselves. If they pay $100 million in taxes, again, chances are they have $100 million left over for themselves. So what. Those of us not making that kind of money should stop whining about other people making more. Maybe they are making that kind of money because in some way they may be paying and supporting 100's if not 1000's or hundreds of thousand people. Maybe we should just say thanks instead if whining. The key is we need to simplify the tax system.

Mini rant is over .........:)

That's the rate, not what they actually pay.

From Garth Turners recent blog on taxation.
I am pleased that another Terbite also reads the Greater Fool blog. I was fishing around there for the past post about how many in Canada at the bottom end of the already effectively pay no taxes.

Taxing the rich as fun as it sounds does not bring in enough to plug the hole of the water going out as in deficit spending.

Most fun will be to see how the Libs deal with increased debt servicing costs that the run up in interest rates will bring.

I am sure it will be a mix of program cuts and more taxation.

I cannot imagine that they would deal with it by shrinking the size of the civil service.

Yes, everyone listen to the wife beater and self described mysoginist kickboxer turned scam coach he surely knows more about the economy than the rest of us.
The people telling you that Tate is a misogynist are the same ones that told you Jordan Peterson is transphobic and Joe Rogan is alt-right. What does that tell you?

Think about it why does one person need billion dollars when yes the world is suffering
you never hear of a billionaire saving the fucking planet
like oceans wildlife poverty
never stops in the world
billionaires just watch the world be like those with money survive and those born into poverty starve
duo you have any idea how fucked up this world is because of printed money the worst thing ever vented
Not a shot at you but that's an easy personal feeling to express but too many people now just read internet forums, 'social' media and clickbait 'news' headlines. All areprofit driven themselves and take advantage of our desire for confirmation of our pre-existing bias.

Travelling, reading more long form media like books helps to open, and change, our perspectives on things. Including what many, many billionaires do to use their money for good.

fwiw...
